Is there anyone in zone 4 or 5 that is growing any of the Taxodium cultivars successfully? I have ordered (maybe foolishly) Taxodium distichum 'Peve Minaret' and 'Peve Yellow'. I have seen these cultivars listed from zone 4 to zone 6. I am sure these plants will need a protected spot, but was curious if anyone else has given these (or any other cultivars) a try?

I've got 'Shawnee Brave'. It's not protected. I tossed it out amongst the others. It seems to be doing fine.
Peve Minaret here--second winter, doing just fine. These aren't real winters though.
Equil and Kevin,
Thanks for the info. I will plant them out in a protected spot, since I am a zone colder than you are, and hope for the best.
I LOVE the deciduous conifers so I need to try as many as possible. I have had really good luck with my dawn redwood, so far.
Thanks,
Mike
I have one growing in backyard, zone 5, in the soil at the top of my tiny pond. It came from the Arbor Foundation. You know the place that sends you 10 free trees if you join. They came bare root. Now that it has attained some height and some small knees because of it's wet feet, I can't bring my self to cut it back for a bonsai.
Oikos has some northern strains in their catalog and they list it hardy to -25°F.
I do have a few seedlings grown from seeds I collected from the Baldcypress that are growing in a yard in the northern suburbs of the Twin Cities. These trees have seen at least -35°F since they were planted in the mid to late 1960's (we had REAL winters back then.) I have a spot in my front yard for one of these seedlings (near my Metasequoia). I am not worried about the straight-species trees, it's the Taxodium cultivars that have me questioning their hardiness.
In reality, there really shouldn't be that much difference in Taxodium hardiness, since the trees growing (and thriving) in the Twin Cities were brought back from Florida (and the trees shouldn't have survived their first winter.)
Mike
I have a Cascade Falls, but this is its fist winter here. Sorry no help for you.
Thanks, all. I will see what happens after I plant these Taxodium cultivars out in my yard. I can only hope that the next 15 winters are mild so the plants can become established enough to handle that one nasty-a$$ winter that is due to come someday in the future.
Thanks again,
Mike
