I have gone back and forth for years. DO I need a dome to start seeds or can I do with out it.. I want to get a kit from Lee Valley that has deep rooting cups but no dome... LMK your thaughts... Z
DO I need a DOME
I don't think you need one, although I've found them helpful to keep moisture in especially when I'm using a heat mat to get seedlings started. So I would say they can be helpful but not necessary (after all, if you direct sow things in the garden they don't have a dome!)
Domes are good for keeping humidity high (especially good for indoors) and preventing excessive drying which is always a problem growing from seed. Eventually the seedlings would hit the top but before that happens, you should have acclimated the seedlings to "normal" conditions so they don't need the extra humidity. Growing seeds outdoors is another ballgame with its own set of problems and rewards.
