Hi all,
hellnzn11 got a thread started in the *recipes* forum and it's been moved over to *vacation and travel*. Basically, want everyone's input on their favorite places to eat in Ca. This is being done for all the states and since I'm always looking for some new place to eat when on the road, I hope you all have some good suggestions.

Good places to eat in California
Hi Sherry! Long Beach has lots of good places to eat...in every price range...I prefer the small "hole in the wall" places....and I'm an enormous fan of Mexican Food!!! (the good old fashioned kind cooked with lard !!!)
I don't frequent the "pricey" places that often...I'd rather spend the money on my garden !
Being a typical guy, I tend to go for quantity vs. quality...!!!
My favorite Mexican places are:
Mi Lupitas (Broadway and Orange)
SuperMex (2nd St. Belmont Shore)
TacoSurf (ditto)
Many "nicer" places on Pine Ave. in the New Downtown ...various ethnic and American foods...
"Bono's" in Belmont Shore is really superb....mainly Italian (???) she also has a place named "Christy's"... on Broadway in Calif. Heights area....
"The Prospector" on 7th and Junipero is the bomb !!!! Really cheap "home cookin"....at extremely reasonable prices...everything from Frogs legs to Prime Rib. to Fried Chicken to meatloaf....food like mom used to make...(my mom never made frog legs though...!!!)
Jd,
Thanks much....go over to the vacation travel forum and they'll be posted there
Sherry
edited to add...I'm really glad to hear of these places because we're frequently on PCH to Long Beach and really needed to know of some places in that area.
I'm with you on that one....hole-in-the-wall Mexican food. What I really miss is Buon Gusto Deli in Belmont Shores/ Naples area years ago.

D mail me the next time you're around here and I'll show you my garden and the Crocosmias I got from you at Dr. Don's....!!!
JD, I think you got the crocosmias from my neighbor, Gale...you haven't heard much from her 'cause I set her up on DG so she'd go to the RU, but I think she's picking up a PC this week and you'll probably be hearing more from her here. Love to see the garden!

edited to add that PCH is my old stomping grounds and I'm just happy to be anywhere between here and Long Beach on a Sat or Sun. Usually we go as far as Seal and I stop at Brita's and then get something to eat and turn around, head south again. The last couple of times we've gone on up through Long Beach and I'd forgotten what a surreal change it is to suddenly be in "The City". It's such a quick change and I love all the grand old houses along Ocean. Hadn't been to San Pedro in about 35 years. Forgot how much I hate that bridge! What are the birds that sound like wild parrots hanging around the palms there? Do you know theones I'm talking about?

Do I "know" the parrots you're talking about???? Oh yeah...you can't live here and NOT KNOW !!! LOL They are everywhere...and they squalk (sp?) from sun up to sundown...there are certain islands in the streets that have palm trees in them that are not "SAFE" to stand or walk under!!!
I don't know exactly what species they are...but they are green and red and very loud...they don't get that close to humans...but they do nest in the eaves of bldgs, etc. Supposedly, they escaped from a coupe someone had and have stayed and flourished here...from what I've observed, as the end of the day approaches, they flock back to the palms at the beach...in LARGE numbers !
JD,
Thanks, don't know why I didn't think of d-mailing you right way to ask about the parrots. We were completely enthralled with them and I do know the palms in the islands in the road you're talking about! Kept circling the blocks to see them and then they'd be on the move to somewhere else, but I knew they *sounded* like parrots! They wouldn't bother me at all.I love the sound. We have a neighbor down the road who's a retired veterinarian and she keeps large birds. She was very conscientious about asking all the neighbors if the noise would bother them, but nobody minds the sound. I like it, but then I also like the sound of peacocks and donkeys, horses. I would love to have donkeys, but know there would be some who would complain. Our area used to have quite a few peacocks, but gone now. If these people don't like the sounds of nature, why don't they stay in the cities? I think you're *blessed* to have the parrots.
Sherry
Don't get me wrong...I love the parrots...!!! Most people here do, too.
To see them up close though, you need binoculars...they don't get as close as the sparrows, flycatchers, phoebes, egrets, pelicans, sea gulls, or the mourning doves...
I'm 4 blocks from the water, and they rarely come this far "inland".....
Hi Mike and Sherry. :-))
Mike, I've never seen or heard about those parrots down here. I finally cut back the rose tree today, hopefully I can get to the back ones soon.
Sherry, you have to see Mikes garden. It's amazing what he has done to that small parcel of land. I didn't want to leave that little piece of heaven. Also, when you come up this way again, let me know and I'd love for you to visit my garden too. I didn't realize that you came up so often. I'm just a little south of Mike and very easy to get to. lol
Donna
Donna...the parrots don't know how to get to Orange County !!! They think the earth drops off after Long Beach !!!
Thanks for your comments on my garden.!!!
I'm off next Tuesday if you want me to help with your climbers...let me know !
Donna, you have to take a run up there just to see the parrots. Very magical just to hear them . They make quite a ruckus
