another one..........
Mockingbird, finally.
All of ours are back to normal, they jump into the bush when they spot a camera.
Nice pics Marilyn!
Great pictures everyone!
I always find it fascinating to watch the mocks chase away the big black crows...sometimes two or three at a time...I've had them dive bomb me when I'm gardening...they don't seem to fear anything....
I once watched one chase my 22 lb. cat right into my back porch...it hung around for days tormenting the cat...then it must have figured out tyhe cat was way too fat to even scale the fence, much less climb a tree to get at it's nest....the cat is a big old wuss anyway !!!
Nice pics!
Im watching a mocking bird at my feeder as we speak...they sure do keep a watch out. It must be the raisins. My woodpecker feed is full of them. We are also keeping count of the magnolia warblers at the feeder, for the bird store. They are suppose to be rare to feeders and eat only insects. We are trying to figure what it is they like in my feeder. I wonder if it is the raisins the brown thrashers eat as well. They waste NO time getting their food. I am sick I cannot seem to get the nice pictures I see here. I am living and breathing to figure out the bird cam thing.Does anyone know why they seem to come in groups...all the different birds, to the feeder at once. Enjoyable to watch them all, but it seems they would get more food if they would come when the male cardinals were not guarding the feeder. Only a woodpecker and a blue jay rules over them so far. Altho the doves wont budge off the feeder no matter how much dive bombing, if they were there first.
Safty in numbers. One dove can be chased by anything. A large bunch fears little.
Marilynbeth, thanks for posting a nice collection of mockingbird photos and funny captions. It's like "a day in the life of..." version of mock.
I'm sure that's what they're thinking about us :) Great shots! :)
whoa...I didn't know mock had an appetite for sunflower seeds. From what I know, mocks are a "fruits and insects" type. Although, they are known to eat some bread from time to time. Your mock has a diverse appetite...lol.
Greenlife,
Now that you mention it, maybe it wasn't a sunflower seed it was eating. The mockingbirds eat the extra nutty peanut butter I put out, maybe that was what it was eating at the time. They also eat the store bought peanut butter suet cake.
Marilyn
Great photos and stories about the Mockingbirds. I dragged out my "Audubon Society Guide to North American Birds" (best bird reference book I've ever found) and guess what? They are in almost every state in the US, except mine. (well, okay I exaggerate - but they are in the vast majority!).
I have a mockingbird who loves mealies, too. I had to set up his own feeder out front so he'd leave the one out back for the blues/wrens/warblers. He shows up every afternoon around 4:00; when he does, I put some mealies out for him, then go out back and feed the rest of the birds. Works great, and he doesnt harass the others...unless, of course, they go near "his" feeder.
Good idea!
