This is a flowering Quince bush in my front yard. It's supposed to bloom in the Spring, but because of the unusually mild weather it is now full of buds and blooming. It is only January 7th! I am in Rhode Island and besides the flowering quince I noticed wild violets looking like they are going to make an unscheduled appearance too. This is very unusual for January in New England!
Unusual weather for Quince (Chaenomeles)
I have no pictures, but anyone cruising through Louisville KY in the last few weeks must have noticed the Chaenomeles speciosa blooming in the three miles of median (between exits 12 and 15) in celebration of the University of Louisville's football bowl win.
Thank goodness the equivalent distance of Euonymus alatus 'Compactus' succumbed to the droughts of 1999, 2001, and 2005.
