Thanks much for the warm welcome. I agree, this is a fun topic. You also made me take a peek in some different forums. Thanks for the temptation. MSG attracted me by their humor. Sometimes their sadness brings tears but that is life. They are a close knit and friendly bunch and like y'all they offer everyone a warm welcome.
Hart~ Thank you for the invite to the swap. I would wish I were retired, young and wealthy! I would chart a vacation by the RU's DGrs have scheduled and in between, I would visit the garden centers, greenhouses, etc in Go Gardening. But not there yet. If we do a vacation, it is to MN for family, rather like Greenkat is doing. But Greenkat better beware. We went to AZ in Feb in the early 70's and went home and packed to move there. It is beautiful this time of year!
I live too close to Louisiana (far east Tx) to have much in drought tolerant plants. I need some too after the past few years. It was way dry here...
...and SallyG ~ leftovers are great ~ plants, seeds and food! I may have to get you to ship them to me... : ) pod
what other forums do you like?
From what I've been hearing about the weather out west, Greenkat may need her long johns and snow boots when she gets to Arizona.
Joey, have fun with school this year. You should see if you can work in a photography class next semester. It certainly would fit in with your major.
Podster, most people don't realize that the valley gets less rainfall than the rest of lush Virginia and I happen to live in an area where it's very rocky, alkaline and dry. I'm finding some of the plants from the western areas that have similar soil do very well here.
Okay, here's a crazy idea. How about if we do virtual swaps with Podster and 4paws? I mean if they see things on the haves lists and have something they want to trade, they could send what they have to me and I'll get them to the right people at the swap, collect what they want at the swap and mail them off to them. Doable? Or just nutty?
hi hart...the virtual swap sounds pretty cool :-)
Virtual swap! Whoa, how dangerous for us... : )) I have donated seeds to some of the other swaps and would be glad to if I have something someone wants. I need to back off on the new seeds tho, my eyes are definitely larger than my stomach...
Hart, your thoughts on the terrain and climate being similar to western parts of the country is exactly why I like MSG, Ga and Fla. Texas has such a diverse climate I don't find much useful on their forum but do so on other forums. I feel it is not the folks as much as the info.
If Az is cold right now, long johns will be in order. We are looking at ice and sleet here right now and sending it east. Sorry all... pod
I just popped into the Coleus forum, I will be growing some from seed this year for the 1st time.
But take a look at this picture a DG posted, I was impressed.

those coleus are gorgeous.
I would also be more than happy to give away for virtual swapping.
Yes, I agree. The picture of the coleus garden is GORGEOUS!!! Coleus is one of my all time favorites. Lady, I will try getting a pic of my one surviving seed sown coleus later today and post for you. It is kind of a strange shape, but pretty despite that.
I am sitting here getting a bit anxious about the upcoming week and all that I have to do. Something on the calendar every day. Oh well, it will come and everything will hopefully get done.
Here is wishing every one a great day. Take care and stay warm.
Ruby
Wow...THAT is a gorgeous pic? All those colors!!!
I'm getting hooked on Coleus, going to try the seeds this year. I like how you can take cutting and have more plants to fill in bare spots in the summer garden. They also bring together plants in a container, helping to blend colors together.
Lots of good stuff in Mid-South Gardening. Good info in Vegetables, too. Haven't seen them all!
I watch propagation, containers, soils & composting, winter-sowing, co-ops, plant trading, perennials; and then some individual plants: daylilies, irises, hostas (very nice thread on companion plants).
