I do know that I got some as extras in a trade, and that's what they sent. I wondered myself, as there is something that looks like a larger flat seed. Maybe someone will clear this up for us both:)

I harvested some of my dianthus' and upon storing them in envelopes ,saw they were fine black 'dust'.Me,too,I wondered if that is what the seed looked like. Not a pro at recognizing seeds yet.I found them on the specified link on one thread, but seems like you would need a microscope to see the actual form of OUR seed!Or these seeds,anyway...Jane

Sweet William (dianthus barbatus) seeds are very very small (just over 1/16" at the widest part) dark brown to black, tear shaped seeds. Hope this helps.

luvublooms - Do you know what kind of daianthus you have? The seeds from dianthus deltoides is much smaller than most. It's black and tear drop shaped. I'd say it's similar in size to black pepper flakes - not quite as small as dust.

Hmmm, they do look like blk pepper grains. And I don't know the real name.B/c I barely know the name Dianthus and Sweet Williams.Still too knew at this. And thank you for the info.Guess we do have some seeds here, after all.Learning everyday!...Jane

Couldn't a person just leave the seeds in their 'husks', since they are so small..plant the husk maybe about 1/4" under or do these seed light to grow?

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

My sweet william arenot microscopic, in fact theyare about the same size ans all the dianthuis family, mine are black, round, flat and about the of a small peppercorn.

All of mine are about the size of black pepper grains. Not dust size..But nowhere near the size of a peppercorn.
