Any tips on Pearly Gates?

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

This is one of the favorites for me. If I can get it to germinate it stays open most of the day.
Last year It grew about seven feet and hovered there never putting out a single bloom.
I had really good luck with some the first year I lived in this place. It covered my chain link and also covered a wooden fence in another area. Now, nothing. Sigh.
I am so frustrated as it is hard to get seed in the first place and then when I do, it is all wasted.Maybe I should just give up, but I don't want to. LOL
Someone said a slightly shaded area is better. That is where this one was.
The ones that did well for me in the past were full sun. They did bloom late and had a late fall display. I am grateful for any display at all.

I see it for sale in many of the nursery catalogs I have been getting lately. From where did you get the Pearly Gates MG that gave you problems?

I boght the latest ones at Target and have gotten them from trades. When they do germinate they do not flower.
Do you know of a good source for them? You are in my zone. Have you grown them and if so under what conditions?
I got the ones that did well from a place in Maryland called Danny's garden store, but he doesn't sell bulk seed anymore.

I have not grown this one yet. Maybe someone can recommend a bulk dealer? I saw a google hit that J. L. Hudson Seedsman had it but it was in a mix. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I bought my Pearly Gates a few years back from Walmart, and didn't have a problem at all with getting mine to bloom. They practically took over the garden fence, and did better than my Heavenly Blue.

I will try them this year. They probably even have their seed racks out for spring already.

I grew Pearly Gates among Flying Saucers with no problem. They were in a raised bed that didn't receive much TLC. Don't fertilize and water only when needed...at least that's how I treated mine.

Good luck!

I saw Scheeper's mail order had Pearly Gates for sale, 100 seeds for $2.05.

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

WOW! Sounds like a bargain, doesn't it. I haven't been to buy any yet, so maybe will try that place. Is it an online order site?

I was looking in their catalog. They list a web site with this address: www.kitchengardenseeds.com

Here's the link for the morning glories http://www.kitchengardenseeds.com/cgi-bin/catview.cgi?_fn=Product&_category=97

Good luck!

Windy, if you have trouble getting your Pearly Gates to bloom, try growing a few in a container or tub. It makes a big difference (at least in my experience).

Yes I got Scheeper's mail order catolgue a few days ago and could not blieve their low prices !

That's a great deal! You get 100 seeds rather than the 6 or 10 usually in a packet.

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

I went to swallowtail seeds site and bought a jumbo packet of them for $5. I think it was 500 seeds. Now I can't go wrong. Maybe I will just line my cyclone fence with them. LOL

Wow! Very nice and all that room! Could it be your soil was too rich? Here's a quote from Scheepers: They prefer full sun, well-draining soil, dry conditions and soil that is not too rich in order to maximize their flower production. Harold
