THE WALL!!!
That is really moving along nicely. Looks wonderful.
Brian... great bit of work.. I'velovedfollowing your progress...intheposts...be sure to save lots of pictures of the wall.. pretty soon you'll not be able to see it at all...for all the plants.. heavenly for sure... Gordon
Brian, I was down south at Tropiflora yesterday and they had some very interesting plants. They might have plants you would want for your wall. They had a whole section of plants mounted on wood with moss, but, on Sat they are short staffed and only the bormilead and orchid people were working. They really didn't know much about the other plants. They are pretty good at answering email. http://www.tropiflora.com/creport/cr14-1/p11.html
Tropiflora often displays at various gardening events in SC and I have bought many plants from them. Their plants are always healthy and Dennis Cathcart has a wealth of information he is always willing to share. I love doing business with people like that.
I love Tropiflora it was one of the first nurseries I visited when starting to collect plants. I have already gotten a order together that I have to send to them. The main problem is cash LOL. I think they have more than I can afford. I really need to go down and visit them again but have not had the chance. I will be going back to Florida next year but I dont know if I can wait that long for these plants.
Actually going there and seeing his plants in person is really dangerous ($ wise). The last time I bought from him I was limited in how much I could buy because my I rode with my friend and she has a small car. LOL
Here are some of the latest pictures. It does not even look like the same wall after adding all these plants. I still plan to cover more of the structure area with moss and other things to hid it better. I have been spending hours on it each day and cleaned out my orchid collection and have added them as well as bromeliads rhipsalis cactus and tons of other odd things.
Looks fantastic Brian! Can't wait to see it in person when I come to shop in spring.
how are you getting them to stick there?
Look forward to having you visit. Hopefully it will not be much of a mess as I hope to start working on the other side of the greenhouse this spring.
Well in the rocks I find that just pushing the plants back and using longfiber spaghnum moss it wedges them in fairly tight and once they get rooted it they should be just fine. As for the ones on the drift wood and on the misting system. I use the plastic ties they are clear to white in color and you can see them in a few of the pics. It makes it much easier to put them up using them rather than using fishing string or metal wire. The plastic ties zip and lock into place so I have have them on their fairly solid. I can remove them once the plant gets a good hold but in most cases after some time the moss and plants will cover it up and they will be very hard to see.
Great progress, that's looking fantastic.
Brian, I put on a workshop for hypertufa troughs & cement leaves & we used vinegar with no ill effects. Let me know how your wall turns out. Do you have any shingle plants?
I am growing around 10 different shingler type plants. I just got done cutting a few for the larger wet wall. I hope they do well up their.
Amazing work, thanks.
Brian what a fabulous and amazing wall you've been creating! Only thing else I can say is you rock!
:) Donna
Brian, I just got back from Brazil where i took a picture of this vertical garden with my cell phone inside an antique store.
I know it's much more formal in structure than yours but thought you might ne interested. They were using a combo of what looked like railway sleepers, fern trunks, bamboo and blocks of peat. Just thought you might be interested
That's neet. I have just the place for something like that. I'll have to start a plan. When you come in my front door, looking straight in you see a wall that needs some pasas.
Brian, I've been followng your wall progress and trying to come up with a way I can do something similar on my wall. I would have to first make the area 'moisture proof'.
That looks really good. I cannot wait for mine to grow a lot more. Down in Brazil I dont think you need to do much more than mount the plant and it grows. Here we have to do so much more to get the same effect. Were you able to get plants while in Brazil or just visiting? I had always wanted to visit Roberto Burle Marx place I hear it was an amazing site in it hayday.
Brian, im afraid I couldn't take any plants as we were traveling around a lot but i did make a special trip to the Sítio Roberto Burle Marx outside Rio. Although he is known as one of the foremost modernist landscape architects, his home design took a much more natural form. Il'l dig up some pics and post them later. The escorted tour takes about an hour and a half but then at the end they take you through the Greenhouses for about five minutes, I could have stayed all day, in fact the guide had to keep coming back to find me because I wouldnt keep up with the group. LOL
I have seen a few old pics of his greenhouses from years ago. It seems no one is able to get cuttings or plants from his collection. It is now owned by the government. I know one botanist who is able to go through the collection to ID the plants. He said their is so much that is unknown without data that he may never know what they are. I would love to see photos of what is left. I hope they are keeping good up keep on the collection some of those plants may not be anywhere else. Hopefully someone will be able to propagate the plants and bring them to the collectors.
Brian i posted most of what i had on another thread, but they dont give you much time in the greenhouse. I may be going back later in the year. I i do i'll photodocumet it for you as best i can.
