Interesting botanical information from "The Second Book of the Historie of Plants" circa early 1800's. Read the half crossed f's as s's and it will make more sense. Before we called them "morning glory" ! This was of an era where hand coloration in books was popular. I have seen some wonderful examples, but this is NOT one of them!
Before the MG, the Great Blewe Bindweed
The next page. The evolution of name seems to progress as : Blewe Bindweed, Convolvulus major, Morning Glory (for I. purpurea)
For the varieties we now call "ensign" it seems to have evolved as: 3-color Bindweed, Convolvulus minor, dwarf morning glory or ensign.

lol i hate old english
Actually, it's Modern English, just antiquated speech compared to our generation. Old English is barely readable to the average person, and pronounced entirely different. Just something I remember from college English 101 (amazingly!).
Wow, the hand colored pages look like they let a preschooler loose with a box of bad crayons. I guess people were just happy to have color at all back then. ;-)
Some poor soul had probably just finished coloring 99 book illustations and couldn't see straight!
