Ipomoea platensis

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

Interesting information from an 1840 botany publication. The Plantfiles do not have a lot of information on this species. Is anyone growing it?

I had to chuckle at the use of english..."in the stove" must mean in the greenhouse.

I had one growing nicely, but it ended up fried when I accidentally neglected it. I plan on trying it again. I remember the leaves on mine when it was still small as being wavy, not yet divided.

Did it ever bloom for you?

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

I've grown it and it bloomed fine for me...never did overwinter though here in my damp conditions...

Here's a thread where this plant was addressed previously...

No, it didn't get a chance to get that big, unfortuantely. The spider mites were having a field day with it too.

It's really a shame that the nice photos in the thread that Ron hyperlinked were never entered into Plantfiles. There is only ONE photo in the file.

I found a couple of the photos from last year, before we moved.. I gotta tell you that i used Messenger on these (all three plants) and they all bloomed in 2006. I had them for about 3 or 4 years and they never would bloom..

#3 some will show the buds a little on the top right.. when we moved, they were left at my Daughter's house in bloom and I think they did not set seeds because of the change in climate in the middle of blooming.. this was in September of 2006

Gourd -

1st) click on the tab at the top of the page that says PlantFiles

2nd) click onto the green tab on the left that says "Search for Plants" which will bring you here
http://davesgarden.com/pf/adv_search.php?Search=Click+here+to+search+for+plants

3rd) Type in the Genus e.g., Ipomoea and then fill in the species >hit search and you'll bring up the results to click onto...

Alternatively you can also click onto the "Search and Browse tab just lower left of the main PlantFiles tab
and you could use the e.g., "View all families search"...scroll through the alphabetical listing pages until you get to the family of interest e.g.,
Convolvulaceae
http://davesgarden.com/pf/tools/names.php?family=Convolvulaceae&z=genus
and continue to focus in on your specific interest e.g., the genus
Ipomoea here
http://davesgarden.com/pf/tools/names.php?family=Convolvulaceae&genus=Ipomoea&z=species
which will display all(!) of the entry points to all of the Ipomoea entries in the PlantFiles...

Hope that helps...

TTY,...

Ron
