I am jumping in feet first! I know nothing about lilies, I want to plant them with my iris, allium, daylilies and poppies on the south side of the house. Here is my list
Asiatic:
Sun Ray
La toya
Zsa Zsa
Oriental:
Arena
Siberia
Tom Pouce
Star Fighter
Oriental Trumpet:
Conco d;Or
What is your opinon of the choices? What is the one thing I need to know? Do I buy more than one or do they multi good?
updated for labeling

Ready to take the plunge!!!
2 things......plant deep enough and good drainage is a must.
Welcome to Lily-land, Ghia. You'll have fun here.
Asiatics are my fastest to multiply, then trumpets, then orienpets (Conca d'Or is one of those). Personally I haven't had a lot of multiplication with my orientals.
Nice list.
Where are you shopping for yours? There are alot of great lily growers in the USA.
Hi Ghia, I agree with Magnolialover, when I plant Orientals, I usually plant 3. I'm not familar with all the lilies on your list. Are they all Orientals? Also, do you have any idea when Orientals generally bloom in your area? Most of mine bloom in July at a time when it can get real hot here. The south side of your house might be a tad too sunny. I'm guessing down your way, you need to give Orientals some afternoon shade. Otherwise, you'll have some severe fading. That's not to say you shouldn't plant lilies there, but it is something to consider.
This is a pic of Chambertain, Acapulco and Conca d'Or taken on July 11 last summer. These are on the south side of the house and I believe they had been blooming for about a week before this picture was taken. Chambertain is one of my favorites.
I'm ordering them in a co-op. I've done a coop with this host before, have always gotten quality bulbs. Not real sure where they are being ordered from.
We get really hot summers 30+ days 100's. I may have to do something different.
Welcome ghia_girl!
You should be fine in your zone as you're just a bit warmer than I am. Most of my orientals bloom around the first of July, when it's starting to really heat up here. With our hot summers, it is best if you can give them some afternoon shade to prolong the blooms. Asiatics in particular can take a lot of sun and bloom in June before we heat up too much.
Not knowing any different, I put my oriental first lilies on the west side by my garage. They were there for 10 years and doing fine (I've since moved). When they were about in full bloom, I'd cut them and bring in the house to enjoy the fragrance.
You've made a nice selection of lilies and the different types will extend the bloom season. Asiatics increase the most, orientals the least and within each division there are some that are more prolific than others.
Welcome to the world of lily love! Ask any questions that you might have and we'll do our best to give you good information. And there are no dumb questions. (actually, there are, but we've all asked them at one point or another. lol)
Moby
What a great list!
A couple of them I haven't heard of before. Could you clue us in as to where you are ordering them from?
Plant the orientals deeper than the others and then cover with a mulch and they might possibly last longer than 3 yrs.
At least that is the length of time they survive here in Wisc.
Welcome to Daves, excellent place to receive knowledge and great people to work with.
Maxine
Maxine, do you really lose your orientals after about three years? Some I mulch, so I don't,but (knock on wood) I haven't lost any here for 6 years. I had one "disappear" for a year, but then it bloomed the next. Interesting....
Are you in 4Paws lily co-op, by chance, Ghia? It looked like a nice co-op, with lots of options for lilies. I think it was from Blooming Bulb, if that's the one you did.
Yes, I order glads from 4paws coop. Didn't look in to the lilies, told myself "I don't like them" I'm in a yahoo group, they are starting a lily coop so I looked - Oh My! I need some now!
Are iris, and daylilies good companions? Watering, and bloom timing? or should I put them with something else?
I have lilies planted in my Iris and Daylilies. Of course, the Iris are done by the time the lilies start. And unless you have a reliable reblooming Daylily like Stella, your lilies may not bloom at the same time. You may also want to include some longer blooming perenials and annuals so you have some constant color once the lilies are done.
Ghia, Beaker has the right idea. I find things like echinacea (there are various varieties that are out there now from purples, to yellows, to oranges) or some petunias that "bloom their heads off" do well too. Daylilies are great and there are some that tend to bloom later, rather than earlier. Another of my favorites is garlic chives, the white flowers in August are really beautiful.
Clematis is another plant that can bloom early and late both and be a great companion plant, as it can help shade the lily's roots. There are so many lovely choices. In my world, everything can compliment a lily ;0)
Iris, daylilies and lilies are great companions and, planted properly, their water requirements are about the same ~ a good long drink about once a week, depending on your weather and soil. When I say 'planted properly', your irises need to be planted in little mounds so that the top of the rhizomes are a bit above ground level.
If you're starting a new garden with perennial flowers, remember that it takes time to build a full looking garden. Perennials put more energy into their long life than flowering, annuals are programmed to grow, make seed from many blooms, and die in one year. So while your garden is getting established, fill in with lots of showy annuals as becker suggested.
Just weighing in as a pretty new lily lover. My first bed was two years old last summer, and my favorite fragrance in the garden HAS to be the Stargazer. Just loved to wander through this bed, and was very pleased with the combination of Iris then, daylily, and lilies in summer, and then into mums in the fall. Very Pretty. Here's a pic - so ghia-girl, even us newbies get besotted VERY quick - Dax
dax ~ what is the lily with the dark red stripe?
Is it Dizzy, Dax? It looks like it. Very nice garden.
Got few more questions? How many of one kind do you suggest ordering? These will ship in March, when do they Have to be in the ground? Will they keep? let say - to take with me to IA RU in May?
Some of the more local growers can be flexible with the sending date, then you'd be fine. But the co-op you are in, this isn't likely to happen.
From my experience, the sooner you get the lily in the ground, the better. Or you could plant the bulbs in pots and transplant later. They'd be in a growing medium then. Lilies are never fully dormant and in the spring, they are shipped and sometimes sprouting already, like they would be happy growing in the box they came in! I guess what I am saying is I would plant them as soon as possible ; they'll be happiest then.
If you love a particular variety, more than one is great. B & D Lilies suggests ordering 3 of a type, for a full/established garden look. Either way is fine for me. Others might weigh in on preferences there too.
Well, if you're coming to IA RU, of course they'll be fine in a pot till then! (snicker, snicker) JK! See you there!
What is IA RU?
Iowa Roundup Come join us!
Tell me more..... Where in Iowa? Seems like I've seen it spoken of in different threads, but I still am not sure what it is or where.

Only a 3 hour drive for you Mag!
I actually just talked with DH about this last night. First thing I thought of when I heard the name was using "Round Up' on something and then replanting (Lol!)
After reading the threads, it sounds fun. I'm still not exactly sure what you do there. Are here vendors? Seminars? Pictures? Lilies?! It's a DG thing that happens all over the country? You meet people from DG? Really, I'm not trying to be clueless, but here I am....clueless.
I think they eat pot luck, gab, swap plants and tour local gardens, go antiquing, and harass Wanda. :)

Ticker, I think I get it now. Thank you. Are you going? I have the a tough time weighing time in the garden here vs. travel and fun, with garden in mind. It does sound fun. RsVP and such things? You just bring whatever will make it 3 hours in the car?
(Ticker, one of my freshly planted peonies is coming up right now. Ugh.)
Yes, I think I'll be going unless something catastrophic happens here at home. :) Yes, I know what you mean about time in the garden vs travel and fun. I'll be lucky to have half of my gardens weeded, edged and mulched by then (thus my garden will not be on any tour). This will be my first round-up just because traveling to Des Moines cuts into valuable gardening time. And I don't do swaps worth a darn, that would require me to have thought way ahead and I'm lucky to make sure both of my shoes match when I go out the door.... :) Wanda would be the best person to ask about the RU, or go over to the RU forum and check out the IARU.. :) But I bet if you come you'll have a blast.

MG - Never been before, I plan on going this year. DH says it's a fair swap IA RU in May for the VW car show in Eureka, AR in August. It will take me 6 hours to get to Des Moines and another 2 to Ceder Rapids. I was thinking of taking spring bulbs, I think they would travel better than potted plants.
Dax80 - will your garden be on the tour? I love the pond and hosta pic!
We bring whatever we have extra to share. Soon there were be new threads for private swaps, plants you're bringing, food you're bringing, who's staying overnight, etc.
Potted plants travel well. Just stick them in boxes where they are fairly snug and they'll be fine. One summer I brought 15 or more plants on a 13 hour drive, they were fine. Almost every trip home the last 30 years, plants came home with us - two 10 hour days of driving, never lost any.
Some peeps are good at seed starting and bring a flat of seedlings/small plants. Others do plant dividing and bring the divisions. Some buy items to give away - yard art, annuals, etc. Some have small gardens and not much to share and come for the fellowship. Oh, we can't forget the fish! We had fish last year too!!
Ghiagirl, tell me more about the VK show in Ark.?
We have been to 2 of the RU's in Des Moines and have enjoyed it tremendously and made many new friends.
always took extra plants [most of us have extra plants or bulbs] and came home with more than I brought I THINK!!!!
Hope to this yr. stay more than one night and do tours of homes in that area and dare I say NURSERIES!
Might just be something that I can't live without.
The North West Arkansas Volkswagen Association car show. It is their 15th, my husband has wanted to go for the last 5 years but something always seem to come up. So this year our plan is he'll go with me to IA RU in May and we will make a point to go to Eureka in August. http://www.nwavwa.com/ there is not any good VW shows around here. There is one in Pike Peak but Eureka is closer.
No good shows in KC or Tulsa?
Not that we have been able to find!
There are so many VW campouts/gatherings/clubs all over the US. Go to Samba.com and dig around in events etc. You'll find lots of action.

Oops - sorry - haven't been able to get back for awhile - Yes, those beauties are Dizzy. And I plant them in groups of five, generally - about 1 foot apart. Since they are Orientals, they don't naturalize, and I like the mass look - Hey - great to hear you'all talkin about the Round-up in Iowa this year - I'm sure Ticker, I, Linda, Hostalover, and bunch of others will all be runnin around as Gypsy Wanda organizes us - no seriously, with Wanda in charge, I know we'll have a great time!! - Dax
Here's another pic - different angle -
Hmmm, This roundup business sounds interesting. Perhaps I could talk my DW into going, she is more of a socialite than I am. Although I am good at talking to plants and grumbling at weeds :*)
intercessor, there very well might be one in Madison. It's looking that way right now.
What the heck, come to both! The more the merrier and we always like to meet more fellow DG'ers ~ how else could you ever meet so many like minded-people? Getting to know them and making friends is the best part, why else would I drive 3 hours to Des Moines, and now I do it a few times a year! :)
Ticker summed up all the activities but to make it simple it's a big picnic/potluck, plant swap and gabfest. Very informal and other activities are optional and dictated by your interests. It's all good.
Did I hear my name taken in vain again???? Iowa round Up on May 5 is the PLACE TO BE!
We're just getting it organized with garden tours, great food & hundreds of plants to swap. Well wortht he trip--and you get to meet a whole lot of us Lily people: Moby, llilyfan, Ticker, Iowaron, anahi, Dax080, Linda_IA, Iowagardengal & lots more. Everyone is welcome!
