Summer Chocolate’. Albizia julibrissin

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hi, I was wondering if anyone here know where I can purchase this tree from? I have searched all over and have not been able to find it for sale. I am a tree addict and would love to try and grow this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Marie.

I would think twice before you purchase this tree or any of it's cultivars. Here is an article you might like to read first. It is from one of the arboretums. You will have to add the http://www because it says do not to link the page , not sur e if that means to a site liek this or personal sites, but not gonna take a chance. Here the rest of the link. plantnames.org/albi671.html

Some say this tre e grows fine with no problems, then those of us who fight with thousands of seedlings in and everywhere will call it a weed tree. We are not kidding when we say thousands of seedlings either.

If you want a tree with the type of foliage like the Summer Chocolate, I am sure the tree experts here will have some excellent suggestions for you.

Thanks for the link. I will check it out. What is often invasive in other places is not here because of our desert climate and lack of rain.

If it were me, I'd try Mesquite. I wish I could grow it here but I don't think it would make it.
In a desert, arid climate like there, it should do fine.
Maybe it is ordinary there, I don't know.

Saw a gorgeous Agonis flexuosa with dark foliage at the nursery yesterday--can't remember the cultivar name but it would give you a similar look without the potential for invasiveness. (I see little Albizia seedlings popping up out here all the time--they seem to do just fine out here with heat and not too much water so I'm guessing they could tend to be pests in your area too, I think the few places they aren't pests are the places where it's too cold for them to overwinter)

Here's a link to the Agonis, I'm not positive if this is the same cultivar I saw but it looks the same

And here's a picture of the regular colored one so you can see the tree's habit:

I definetly like the foilage on the agonis. I have never seen one for sale here locally though. I will have to do a google search and see wht I can come up with.

The page I linked to is San Marcos Growers, they're a wholesaler here in CA but I bet they could ship to AZ, you could try asking at one of your local nurseries to see if they could order it for you.

Acton, CA(Zone 8b)

If you don't mind a little drive, they have several of these here in a local nursery in Los Angeles.

Which one Bob? The summer chocolate or the Agonis? My friend and I are actually planning a trip to San Diego in March. (beach for the girls and plant shopping for us)

Acton, CA(Zone 8b)

Summer Chocolate... there are still 5 left 5 gal plants at Sperlings Nursery in Calabasas, nothern LA county. Not many leaves left on them this time of year, though.

Not sure we will be able to go that far north even if we are able to still make our trip. I wish I could find an online source that would ship!!
