Quail Eating

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

I feed somewhere between 200 and 300 quail each day. They eat a lot.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I planted a Weeping Candied Apple Crabapple tree between the doors on the north side of my house. It is about 12 years old now, is very pretty when it blooms. Has lots of fruits which must not be too attractive to the birds until after the berries have frozen. The Cedar Waxwings do not eat them, maybe too close to the house, as the Cedars sure like the small crabs on the 10 Prairie Fire Crabapples that make up my Crabapple allee.

Here is a photo I took yesterday of a quail eating some of the few crabapples that are left on the Candied Apple. It was really funny to watch as all that are left are the ones on the tips of the limbs. They were also standing on their tippy toes on the piled up snow to try to reach some of the fruit on the lower limbs.

I'm with Magpied... (as we're both here in lovely Phoenix, AZ)... we're so used to seeing them in the desert, not in snow! Here's their natural habitat here!

Thank you for the nice comments. I was gone most of today and believe me the quail met me as I came out of the garage, and I understood them very well when they were requesting something to eat. i fed them even tho it was almost dark.

Donna, you have a lot of quails there to feed! It must be fun watching them, what do you feed them with? It must burn a hole in your pocket, but what a great thing to do!

Thank you for all the nice compliments. Yes, costs a lot to feed those hungry guys, but sure is fun to see them come running as soon as I put the feed out. I am using Chicken Scratch from Wal Mart this year. But I was at the store twice this past week and they still don't have any more scratch in. Everybody must be feeding now with all the snow on the ground. The Weeping Candied Apple Malus is one of my favorites.
