don't know the name of these pests. Are they a threat to my golden raintree. I have tried sevin 10% oils, etc. no luck. now they are all over the azalea that I planted at the bottom of the raintree.
Thanks so very much for your reply.
CLOSED: these black and red bugs are all over my raintree
please reply to this thread to myemail as well. thank you.
i can't see clearly enough, but they could be some kind of box elder bug or nymph of that genus.
Problem not solved. Help, someone?
haydee, in response to your dmail, i don't feel comfortable in responding to an email address that i am unfamiliar with, but i would take some of the bugs to your local extension office and see if they can id them for you. then you can find the proper way to deal with them. they still look like some kind of box elder nymph to me and i'm not sure that sevin will even work on them to any degree. also, exactly what kind of raintree is it? if that is a common name for another kind of tree, it would be helpful because certain trees attract host insects. it's possible that you will have this problem all the time if the tree attracts them. good luck.
Haydee

Sure look like boxelder bug nymphs to me. Eastern Boxelder Bugs (Leptocoris trivittatus) nymphs are red adding black as they mature. However, there is a golden rain tree bug (goldenrain tree) or red-shouldered (redshouldered) bug (Jadera haematoloma) that looks similar to the boxelder bug and is in the same family. It also feeds on the golden rain tree's leaves, stems and developing seeds. Without a more closeup photo showing the details of the markinigs, it is difficult to tell what they are. See if these links show and/or describe your bugs. They are found in North Carolina as well as other states. I have seen it on chinaberry trees here in Texas.

thank you htop your first link was correct. it is called jadera nymph and it likes raintrees. Now I need to find some insect sprayer to get rid of them.
sevin did not work. I understand that roach/termite spray will work. I also intend to clean, rake and bag lawn. Thank you all so very much for your replies. They helped lots.
