What smells good where you are?

Baton Rouge, LA

shortstuff,
I wish I could show you my friends evergreen wistera, His is loaded with deep purple blooms, it is on an arbor, in the ground with light shade. It makes mine look bla!
I should be getting some small blooms soon though. But my crinum is looking pretty good considering I dug it up and put it in a pot 5 weeks ago.

Good Luck? 4004 I think you used yours up when you got such a great bargain price! LOL

That is not one I am familiar with. Four different Leucothoe is listed in one of my books but not Florida. It apparently will need shade (partial or full). Don't be grazing either ~ it says leaves and nectar are poisonous.

Have you decided where to plant it? You will have to keep us posted. Must be a neat plant nursery to find such oddities. Sincerely, good luck!

Hmmmm, the rain smells good where I am!! LOL Oh, y'all are talking about flowers, right? grin

Here's my planters a month ago http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=3466042 Look how fast the Nicotiana grows!!! LOVE this scent!

Where I am at, most of my fragrant flowering plants have had there full bloom. The Confederate Jasmine already did it's full blooming for Spring and the scent was heavenly delightful. My Night Blooming Jasmine is starting to fill out and has yet to overpower the garden with it's wonderful fragrance at night. I am waiting.
My Miami Supreme Gardenia did a full bloom and now apears to be getting ready to relax a bit. I can't get enough of these fragrant flowers. May seems to be the best month of the year for my fragrance flowers to be with the most blooms.

Chantell,, does that "flower" smell like baby powder???
LOL,, Elaine

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Elaine - LOL....umm, actually yes...."most" of the time....

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Well, Ollie Brugmansia is blooming right outside the motor home. where we are parked in Florida.. Smells wonderful along with those old varieties. I hope I smell fresh fish cooking tomorrow night...LOL
Love that Baby powder smell.....
Elaine

Gardenias ... they are blooming their heads off! LOL

Albany, OR

Heliotrope smells absolutely wonderful right now. (Sorry I don't have a picture to show)

Hi Chantell. Did you plant Nicotiana as an annual? Where did you get it?

Connie - I did...I have 2 plants in huge planters. Of course after hearing how well it self seeds...I'm wishing I'd found room for it in the flower bed. I purchased it from Flower Scent Gardens - Glen has sadly closed shop now though. I believe I might have a few seeds that I got from him last year. You were so kind to share with me...I'd be more then happy to return the favor, if you'd like.

Sterling, VA(Zone 6b)

I would love that. I looked up the plant I love it.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

May not be a lot...but I'll get some out to you Mon - will that be ok?

Sterling, VA(Zone 6b)

Anything would be great.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Found another new fragrant plant today--I bought it for its flowers and never even knew it had a scent, but I had it sitting by my front door along with some other new purchases and I kept noticing a fragrance every time I came in and out, finally figured out this was where it was coming from! Smells sort of like grape combined with jasmine--very pretty!

Also - giant honeysuckle - wish I could send the scent!

Right now, it's a yellow daylily with strong honeysuckle scent. Still heliotrope. And lavender. And moonflower (at night). And mignonette. And a little leftover wisteria keeps blooming. And the orange nasturtium smell gorgeous.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ahhh...moonflower!! Took me 3x to get seeds going (I'm a seed newbie)...gotta get them in the pot/ground...hope it's not too late.

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

Two of my favorite: a fragrant nepeta (totally different from the others) and Sweet Annie Weed (have to call it a weed - it reseeds like crazy, but smells wonderful!)

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Oh,, I don't have moonflowers this year.. sighhh,, this lily was blooming today and perfuming the whole front yard..

Do you know which Nepeta is fragrant, if I may ask? And do the cats think so too? : )

This is a new smell for me this year and I think it's beautiful also.

I grew the Nepeta from seed purchased from Thompson Morgan. I just now looked it up in their online seed catalogue because I couldn't remember the name. It is Transcaucasica Blue Infinity. It is also in the plant file here, but the T&M photo of it is much better. I don't know about cats, but I feel like a cat might feel - delirious when I smell it, like I want to just roll around it it! It self sows, but I wouldn't consider it invasive, especially if you want masses of it here and there...It is a very beautiful and complementary lavendar blue and blooms a long time.

LOL This plant sounds too wonderful but it gets tall ~ do you keep yours staked? Regular old catnip that the cats love smells like what we used to call pigweed on the farm. Yuk!

Jeri ~ unusual plant ~ what is it?

Coral Springs, FL

Jeri: looks like Rangoon Creeper - I love mine. I was told it would take two years to flower, but it took 13 months! Mine grows right next to my vegetable garden, so I get a great whiff every morning when I'm picking tomatoes and eggplant!
Where is Greenwell Springs? I'm from Lake Charles originally.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Yes that is Rangoon Creeper and I just love it!!!

LOL never heard of our big town? Don't feel bad we're just a post office mostly. We're in East Baton Rouge Parish and became the city of Central in July, 2005 just before the hurricane. At our incorporation we were the 12th largest city in the state. After the hurricane we became the 10th largest city overnight. Which we weren't prepared for!!!! The traffic is unbelieveable!!! It takes 15 minutes in the morning to get out my driveway. I just love it!!! NOT!!!

Some chamomile is blooming now (late... I started it from seed) and it smells gorgeous. Ahhh.

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

Right about the smell of regular catmint - but this is different! I do put a few props around my plants, or else grow them near something that helps to hold them up. Right now they are in the daylily bed, near some regular lilies that they will just mask as the flowers fall.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

now it is southern magnolias and confederate jasmine. crinum americanum in the woods. light sort of powdery scent from the palmettos... the trees and dwarfs. a few late gardenias and honeysuckle. my datura at night. even a very late carolina jessamine

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I have lots of datura seed and never think to start them early enough... am jealous ~ I love their fragrance and to sit and watch them unfurl in the evening.

The strongest fragrance here right now is still my purple pot of petunias ~ it stops me in my tracks at dusk when my mind isn't on it...

DFW area, TX(Zone 8a)

Globe / sweet basil. Of the herbs, it's probably my favorite scent of all, with rosemary a close second. Our basil is going crazy right now.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Oriental lilies! lemon basil . . . lavender . . . Dianthus - Helen . . . catmint . . . Westerland Rose.
