BAMBUSA LAKO - One of our all time favorites. Gorgeous in full sun and harsh conditions. This plant has one of the most upright and vertical profiles of any of the clumping bamboos. It is also blessed with a somewhat unusual rhizome configuration that makes it possible and easy (with selective pruning beginning in about year 2) to aproach the look of the archetypal Japanese grove without having the never-ending problems when dealing with a running bamboo. The black of this bamboo is highly polished with intermittent green stripes. Depending on what size plant you start with it might not look black until it's 2nd season. Puts up lovely 4+ inch canes. Terrific by the ocean and the leaves don't get trashed in heavy winds.

Hey Becky.................... they also do a blue bamboo

HOW COOL

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

ardesia and Mark - Great websites! I definitely need to consider a Bamboo that can withstand windy conditions. (We do get hurricane force winds here during summer and fall.) The blue bamboo is pretty and unusual looking, but I still really like the look of the black bamboo. It just has an elegant look to it. I see where some folks grow it in container pots instead of the ground. I wonder if that would be something I could consider instead of growing in the ground. I could still stick the pot in the bog garden to keep it from spreading where it would look very tropical and visually appealing. I'm just thinking all this to myself.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

It would still look good, even in a pot Becky...................... but that would matter if you got the clump forming one would it.

My guess is....................... BECKY IS GONNA GET ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

LOL! Yeah ..... I'm sure debating it in my head. I am just a little leary if it is invasive. I'm already dealing with another plant that I may have put my entire yard at long-term risk for. And I should've known better. Well, actually, I didn't know until I had already planted it in the ground. Too little info, too late. That's me. (A few bubbles short.)

Here's what the bog area now looks like with the soil, compost, and cypress mulch down. And I added the one pond to the scheme of things. Wouldn't some black bamboo look nice next to the pond? LOL!

Hmmm, Mark are you causing trouble again?

Phyllostachys nigra has a non-running rhizome, but no bamboos are considered not to run, and Florida has much different growing conditions than here. Lots of warmth, water, you get growth.

The three categories bamboos are placed in according to la Bambouseraie are 'running a little', 'running' and 'running a lot'.

Water is another thing, most bamboos hate to have their feet wet. Moist yes, free draining yes. There is one which will actually grow in wet conditions, Phyllostachys heteroclada, it has channels which will cope with water.

Many seed producing perennial plants in Florida will be invasive, for a butterfly attracting plant my Lythrum salicaria or Purple Loosestrife attracted many of the white butteflies, also the Silver Y moths liked, it, Meadow Brown, and I had a Wall Brown on it. Bumble bees loved it too. I haven't had a serious problem with it setting seeds in th garden, but you might becky. They will grow in dry or boggy soil, mine get covered with water most of the year and they live in it happily.

Gheese louise!! run away thread....LOL! Mark chop Becky a piece of that bad boy and she can stick it in a vase of water, voila!! Roots!! Bamboo is easy to grow in plain water.
If it gets crazy Becky, just pot up extra new growth and send them for postage to other DGers. Seems easy enough to control..sure it grows fast but not like most invasive plants. A nice specimine plant for the bogs I think!

Go get those clippers now Mark ...LOL!!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

WELL........................................................ THAT TOLD US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

One thing Janet............................. Lythrum in the USA????????????? is a BIG NO NO!!!!!!!!!!
It is noxious over there and is banned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Everything in the pond went dormant except the Lemon Bacopa and the Dwarf Sweet Flag. I have hardy waterlilies and some red root also in pots in the pond. But it looks pretty bare right now. Though the red root is showing new shoots coming up in the pots. And some Milkweed seeds floated in one of the pots. Not Swamp Milkweed though, so it probably won't grow there.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Deb............................... LOL, okay sweetie pie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where do i clip it????????????????????????????????????????????

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Only prohibited in some states Mark, there are good garden forms. It is prohibited in FL.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

I know....................... Been through this one before with someone else who wanted some...........

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

LOL! In between my posts y'all jumped on here and added some great info! Okay Mark, what do I need to do to get a cutting of black bamboo from ya? Deb talked me into it! LOL I may grow it in a large pot though since it doesn't like "wet" feet. And I have the perfect spot in my bog garden. :-) :-) :-) :-D

Wallaby - I checked out the weblink you posted and the words "vigorous grower" to 35' jumped out at me like a red blaring warning light! Did I read that right? Are they saying 35' tall??? Oh my gosh! Bummer on the loosestrife being a no-no to ship to the USA.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Becky, if you want some loosestrife i can send you about 50 seeds or so.................... but you may regret it!!!!!!!!! plus you may get thrown in prison for growing a banned plant!!!! LOL

If you want a cutting Becky all you need to do is tell me how to do it and ask very nicely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Mark - If the loosestrife is invasive in Florida I do NOT want it! (For good reason! lol)

Deb - Help! What would be the best way for Mark to take a cutting of the BB? I know absolutely nothing about shipping something that is not rooted and is coming from the UK. Would a lengthy shipping period cause it to die? I haven't a clue on this one at all.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Becky, many grow taller than that, 70' or more. P. nigra only grows to 6-8 metres, that's well over 20'.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Oh go on have some Loosestrife seed................... then you can throw the seed into someones garden that you hate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Its not the shipping etc that matters.................... i will just wrap it in wet paper, that way it will be fine!!!!!
All i need to know is how to do the cutting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Janet

In zone 7 and above, P. Nigra grows to well over 30'.... http://www.lewisbamboo.com/pblack.html

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Mark - ROTFLMBO! Don't tempt me with the Loosestrife seed! ROFL!

wallaby - Thank you for the website link of how to cut and propagate bamboo! Mark did you see the website page on how to do the cutting? wallaby, THANKS so much for the website hook up! You folks from the UK rock! Honestly!!!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Mark, my info came from la Bambouseraie, a major grower in the South of France not far from the Mediterranean.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh dear
looks like they have to be planted as soon as cut!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or they die from shock!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

We have google!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Mine came from a main grower in the USA.........................

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Everything is bigger there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ROFL!!!!!!!!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Yep, seems to be.......................... or thats what they say anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have you seen that gorgeous Blue bamboo Janet???????????

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I looked it up, hardy to -10C, no mention of the blue in the catalogue but that site says in it's new growth period. It has the least running symbol.

I have seen one with very blue culms in a wholesale catalogue, but it isn't hardy. Can't remember which it was though!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

http://www.bamboonursery.com/blue_black.htm

Have a look Janet

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Himalayacalamus hookeriana, oh yes it is NICE! Hardy to zone 8 too. Not in my catalogue.

http://www.bamboos.com/mountain%20bamboo.html

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

oh well, i guess they cant stock everything in the catalogue!!!

It is a beautiful colour isnt it......................

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Both black bamboos, the lako and the P. nigra can get really, really tall but as a rule they would max out at 20' here. One of those Lako's has my name on it; I just can't figure out how to sneak that one in. And, at those prices sneaking is the only way I could get one. LOL

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Wow! This thread got long! LOL I don't know who Ella is, but I'm a huge pond plant nut!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

:-)))))))
Mark your website is dangerous; I fear another obsession coming on.

If I could ever get rid of Lucifer (appropriately named!) I would love to try another, preferably one known to be less of a thug.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Y'all are a hoot!
Mark, Just take a cut off the tip of one of the stalks...emmediatly wrap the cut end in a very wet paper towel then wrap a baggie around it and tie a rubber band. Then wrap in wet newspaper, and put in a large bag. It will ship in a bubble envelope then.. The cuttinf doesn't have to be very long. I would take about 6-8" cutting. Then when Becky gets it she can put the cut end into a vase in her kitchen window and wait for it to root.. maybe a few weeks.

Becky, our baby frit is in a J as we speak.. I will be shipping her and some seeds to ya in couple days..

This has been a long day, I have been working on making some wintersowing tables for my flats. Got it done..I will sow a bunch of seeds tomorrow and they will sit under the tree for a couple months.. At that time the sun will be in just the right position to get them growing.

Hugs all around!!
