Ipomoea purga

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

I recently purchased these seeds that are supposed to be I. purga. They are certainly unlike any other Ipomoea seeds I have ever had. With so much misinformation out there, I am wondering if they really are correctly identified. There are no seed photos in the Plantfiles to compare them to.

Here are the seeds in comparison to regular JMG seeds.

Beth - so far all of the suppossed Ipomoea purga has turned out to be Ipomoea turbinata...and the seeds you have there look like Ipomoea turbinata...

Beth, so purga is the correct synonym for turbinata, not palmata as I stated in your
other thread. I have purga seeds which I have never been able to germinate.
Could just be that my seeds id'd as purga were old when I received them.
Will be interesting to see how the purga does for you.

I guess we will have to wait for blooms to be sure. That's okay if they are turbinata, I have never grown those either.

I have ordered a one pound whole jalap root from Mexico. This tuberous root is definitely from Ipomoea purga, but I'm not sure I will be able to get it to grow after it has been dryed out. It will be a gamble.

Beth, If your source just dug it up and dried it out somewhat for shipping,
it will probably be fine.

I think they are just like a potato, they sprout with any encouragement!

patootie - Ipomoea purga is a legitimate distinct species, but(!) the seeds that have been offered as Ipomoea purga have so far all turned out to be Ipomoea turbinata...so >it's not really any type of synonym situation here as much as it is suppliers providing incorrectly identified seeds...

I also have real dried Ipomoea purga root from Mexico that is at least 15 years old and extremely dry...it has a very 'smokey' ham sort of odor...almost like morels > but stronger...but I doubt that the dried root I have is still viable...it seems very (!) dry and I wouldn't take a chance on trying to get it to grow...I keep it just for reference...

The roots Beth gets may be fresher and may be worth trying to grow...

I've also been trying to locate seeds of Convolvulus scammonia > yellow flowers, but all I can ever locate is dried root available in the near east...

Hi, Ron:

If you can read Ukranian, here is a link:

Ron, Thanx for clearing that up for me. I had managed to convince myself purga and turbinata
were synonyms. I didn't have any help screwing that up, did it all on my own.
If Beth can get the tuber to grow, hopefully it will be the real purga.
I have old seeds for purga from either Mr Hudson or Banana Tree about 10 yrs old.
I don't know if they're true purga seeds.
I sent Raydio 2 seeds last yr. He got one to germinate, which was more than
I could do, but lost the vine
before it bloomed.

I got the root in the mail, but it was not a whole root but slices of one. I sent it back and told them to send a whole root or refund my money.
