Are seed germination instructions a Clue....?

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Just wondering....And getting more confused by the minute. Can the seed germination tips be an indication as to whether or not a particular seed is a winter sowing candidate?

Here's an example: African daisy / Osteospermum....From seed; sow indoors before last frost, or From seed; direct sow after last frost
This example is an annual/tender perennial

Good question, I'm new to winter sowing and your question is my question, too. I think the concept is to experiment with various seeds ,no matter what the sowing directions are, and to share the results. Anyway, that's what I'm going to do.

Hi Deborah,

Check this out. this tells you what to look for in seeds that can be winter sown :o)

Hope it helps http://www.wintersown.org/wseo1/Packet_Terms.html

With your example, I'm thinking tender plants aren't ones that you'd sow in January or February, but people do use the wintersowing method with annuals & tender perennials more toward spring... It's like sowing seeds in a cold frame, you can start them a little before your "direct sow after last frost" date.

The seeds that mention cold stratification in their germination instructions are great wintersowing candidates, as the freeze/thaw as they sit in the potting mix during the winter cold is exactly what they need. Also, anything that says "direct sow in fall" can be wintersown. "Reseeds readily" or "self-sows" are also good indicators.
