Yellow Morning Glory - ipomoea ochracea December blooms

Edinburg, TX

My i. ochracea has been blooming since last month...which is late to me as they usually start around late September or October. There are hundreds of buds forming so am expectings lots more blooms. Decided to show ya'll a few I just took. Had to get on the stepladder to photograph some as they tend to bloom from the top...where it gets more sunshine.

I love it. Mine didn`t have time to bloom but the roots are there so I sure appreciate the preview of what they will do! Beautiful!

Where did you find the yellow ones !!

Edinburg, TX

I got my original seed stock from Reunion Island and have been growing them in south Texas for a few years now.
I get seedlings from fallen seeds so I don't need to sow any.

Cat,
Are they strictly annuals or do you get some vines surviving over winter?

Edinburg, TX

My vines range from a few months old to about four years old. They survive our winters as we rarely get any snow or freezing temps. Last time in snowed Dec. 24, 2004 the foliage froze. It was back into the 80's the next day but the foliage was damaged so I cut the vines back to about 6" from the ground and they grew back. They are the ones in the photos. The frost and freezing temperatures will burn the foliage so I'd suggest anyone up north moving them into a greenhouse for the winter or just cover them up really, really well. If your ground freezes well, guess the roots will too.

FYI: Last time it snowed this far south during any given day was in 1967...and the previous White Christmas was in 1895.
