Heucheras

Perris, CA(Zone 9a)

I was wondering if anyone has heuchera plants that have recently started blooming. I purchased this plant from High Country Gardens last spring. It bloomed a little bit within a couple of weeks. It was very small during the summer...in fact, I thought it was dead. Now suddenly during fall, it has grown beautiful foilage and flower stalks are beginning to come up from the plant. Is it because of the weather we are having this fall or is it because of the plant's natural biorhythm?

Thanks and have a good day,

Chuck

In my experience, Heucheras are slow to get going, but once they do, you'll have plenty to share or divide. None of mine are blooming in winter. Plants do strange things sometimes, especially if the weather is equally strange or if you live in a mild clime.

I highly recommend the book Heucheras and Heucherellas by Dan Heims and Graham Ware and the following website: http://www.terranovanurseries.com/wholesale/

Be careful. Heucheras are habit-forming. ;-)

Happy to help. You'll love the book. The writers are pretty passionate about these plants and the color photos are gorgeous.

I just located the book on the Amazon.com website, I think. Is part of the title: Coral Bells and Foamy Bells. I am going to order it next Wednesday. Thanks for the info about the book...Chuck

I have noticed in the fall in so cal (if you can call it that-maybe it should be the windy season instead!) many of my plants will bloom or start to leaf. I think it might be that they think it is spring, since we really have no winter. Odd . . . . my heucheras are still dormant, but they do clump up and increase pretty easily and bloom in the spring. Nice . . . .

My big heuchera which is about six inches in diameter is blooming beautifully. It is just a plain heuchera but I will see if I can take a photo of it.

Thanks,

Chuck
