Verticileum wilt?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

I had to cut down an ailing sugar maple today. Not quite dead yet, but very close. Interesting patterns in the wood. Does this indicate Verticleum wilt?

Hi Scott,

Some sort of decay fungus, maybe Ganoderma or Armillaria or similar. Not enough to go on to say what, but not Verticillium which is more a disease of leaves and twigs, not the trunk or roots so much.

Those interesting patterns are much more likely an indication of CODIT (Compartmentalization Of Decay In Trees). See Alex Shigo's fabulous text on the subject.

The tree tried to wall off invading organisms in many directions and dimensions. It obviously was losing the battle when you terminated life support.

But, hey, it wasn't like it was a Viburnum, after all.

Nice spalted maple you have there. Woodworkers would love it.

Uh-oh. Would they like it in 16" lengths?

Woodworkers get cold, too.
