WOW!!!

VA was just mentioning in the chat room about putting in 1000 Darwin Parade and 1000 Golden Parade tulips last fall... that photo is just astonishing!

Now I need to know where the 1000 muscari went....

:-)

Falls Mills, VA

Look close.....the muscari are in with the tulips.

LOL.... I missed them! I was just so blown away by the bold colors of the tulips!

What (if anything) did you overplant that border with for the summer?

Falls Mills, VA

there is a row of daylilies between the tulips and the stone wall, they were just begining to come up when this pic was taken. The wife planted some marigolds after the tulips died back. I was so busy mowing hay all summer I hardly had time to look at the flower bed till it was time to pull out the dead marigolds and mulch.

Here is another view.

Virginian, How close together did you plant these gorgeous guys. I hope they do well for you again this year. Your must not have a deer or rabbit invasion. Thanks for the pictures. Patti

WOW-and-a-half!

What a breath-taking border!!!!!!

Falls Mills, VA

They were planted on 5" centers. No deer or rabbits in the yard. Thanks your kind comments.

The display these flowers put on was stopping traffic on the road in front of the house. The second picture was taken on a cool morning before the sun hit them. They would open wide in bright sun and then close up in the evening.

That's the most beautiful bulb garden I've seen outside of government grounds. Truly stunning. What a great job. I'll bet they did stop traffic!!

wait, just a moment or two, I need to pick my jaw up off the keyboard
That is so beautiful! I love the muscari in with them.

Keith,

I hope you fertilized them??

Falls Mills, VA

I just tossed some 10-10-10 on them before I put fresh mulch over them......something like 10 lb over a bed 4 feet wide by 120 feet long. Do you think I need more?....or should have used less? Last year I gave the tulips planted there something formulated for bulbs.....6-9-9 I think it was.

Can anybody visualize a combination with Mrs. Scheepers and Queen of Night? Not in rows but as a mixture?

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

That's inspiring, Virginian!
What zone are you in? I'm looking forward to seeing what comes back next spring. Thanks for sharing the photos. :-)
bleek, what color is Mrs. Scheepers?

Northern Michigan, MI(Zone 5a)

That is awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thankyou for sharing

Mrs. Scheepers is yellow

Virginian......You need to pick up every other kernel of fertilizer. It requires about 5 ounces per 6 square feet. Your area is 480 square feet and thus need 80 ounces or 5 lbs. Just hope it rains a lot and that your soil drains well. You most likely will have some obese plants next Spring.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

ROFLMBO!!!

"pick up every other kernel of fertilizer"

hahahahahahaha! oh yes, I can just see that happening.... LOL

It's been raining a lot already this fall/winter, so I don't think it's going to be a problem.

Oh, and I think those other two tulips (yellow & deep purple, right?) would be a striking combination.... maybe with something little and white to set them off (would anemone blanda bloom at the right time for that?)....

Lawrenceville, GA(Zone 7a)

You have room and want to plant some?

Falls Mills, VA

4paws,
I am in zone 5. I am in the mountains if southwest Virginia, at an elevation of 2000 feet. Our weather here usually mimics the Ohio Valley.
We have had a lot of rain the past year.....so much in fact that it made it difficult to get hay dry enough to bale.

bleek,
LOL at picking up every other grain of fertilizer.....the visual of that.......the neighbors will know for sure that I have gone off the deep end. Too funny. I will heed you instructions and lighten up on the fertlizer next year.

When these tulips have given up the ghost and quit blooming I was thinking of replacing them with red and white tulips. And not arrange them in rows but swaths of alternating red and white.....so the bed looked like a giant peppermint stick/candy cane.

Here is yet another view of this bed.

A giant peppermint stick - the folks who drive your road are lucky for the incredible sight!

Makes me start dreaming again of some kind of machine to dig with around here, though admittedly, so far digging by hand hasn't been too bad, once the green stuff is gone.

Very nice, Keith.

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

The red and white mix sounds glorious!

(and very patriotic if you keep the grape hyacinths.)

One of my favorite combination plantings is Apeldoorn (red), Golden Apeldoorn (yellow) and Apeldoorn Elite (red and yellow bi-color). I planted them randomly in the same bed and was really pleased how the Apeldoorn Elite blended the other two colors.

Oh, Wow, Virginian, that is really something! I like the look of yellow and red tulips too. This is a pic from last spring, I think maybe after they started to fade somewhat, but I don't have as much area to work with. A thousand of each????!!!! Wow!

Lori,
Merry Christmas!
I love your picture. That's the same porch I plan on putting on our house, hopefully next fall. We have to build on the house first. Nice bunch of tulips.
