Pomegranites (SP?) from seed?

Stockton, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Folks, Just cleared my Pomegranite tree of it's last monster fruit and took them to the office. Many requests for seedlings but I don't have a clue. Can I plant seed from one of the ones I have left. Cuttings? Help!
Thanks, Brian

Brian,
They're easy to grow from cuttings - I've done both dormant & midsummer cuttings with equal ease. The National Clonal Germplasm Repository for pomegranate(Punica spp.) is located at UC-Davis - and they send out dormant cuttings of the various varieties they have in the collection - think they will send actively-growing cuttings in some cases/localities.
I got some of the Russian selections last year - 100% success rooting those dormant cuttings - just dipped 'em in Rootone, and stuck in a well-drained soilless potting mix. Couldn't have been easier.
They also seem to be fairly easy to grow from seed - I pitched a couple of 'Wonderful' fruits that rotted before I got around to eating them, into one of the flowerbeds last year, after the first of the year, and got a dozen or more 'volunteer' seedlings that popped up with no care whatsoever.

I could have sworn I posted a response to this earlier but I guess I didn't...or did you post this somewhere else too? If your pomegranate is a named cultivar like 'Wonderful' and, I would recommend propagating by cuttings instead of seed (as long as the cultivar isn't patented). Seed from hybrid cultivars won't always come true to the parent, so you don't really know what you're going to end up with if you grow it from seed.

Thanks you guys, Lucky, I live about a 30 minute drive from UCD! I have been meaning to get there.
I will try both methods. Not sure what cultivar. The tree was in when I bought the house 15 years ago. I had a wonderful crop this year with many a monster fruit.
I will try both methods as I saved one Pom for seed.
Should I wait till Spring to take cuttings? Soft wood or the harder pieces?
Thanks again, Brian
PS-ecrane I may have goofed and posted this elsewhere too.

Please post ,weither or not Davis gives you cuttings . I thought it was mail order only .
I want to get a striped [ tiger ] fig , a large pom and a persimmon . I am waiting until March to ask for some but would rather drive there , if I can pick up and maybe hit their bookstore .
If they give you cuttings always get 2 or 3 in case one dies . You can always give them away if they all grow .
