When Good Snow Turns Bad

Peoria, IL

Ahhh, snow! The beautiful fluffy white stuff that makes children's heart's race. The magical substance that can turn a bland midwestern landscape into a clean and sparkling wonderland. What happens when 13" falls with wind from just the right direction? Drifts! Drifts up on to polyhouses which come crashing down on innocent little grasses and perennials.

Wind from south, southeast blew all kinds of snow between the houses and piled on top.

Luckily, one was not in use. Lots less work for me cleaning them up.

Inventory will be hard to accomplish in this situation!

Couldn't even get into the one that was empty. There's always a silver lining in every cloud. The Cravo Greenhouse that we were considering just got moved up to high priority! Finally!

Sorry My friend. Wait till it melts. All will be well.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

What a terrible thing to wake up and walk out too. Hopefully it will melt soon. Maybe your babies will be alright having the snow at least insulate some of them.

Hope you don't get much more and you get your new greenhouse soon.

Oh my looks like all of the snow for miles around drifted on and around your polyhouses. The photo taken inside looks like a giant snowman decided to sit down on the house. New greenhouse...what a lucky guy. kt

Wow, Ernie, what a bad morning you had. I hope you can salvage most of your stock. Were any of these greenhoses heated when this happened? I've never seen a collapse quite like that. What are the frames made of...

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Very sad sight...so sorry.

Pat,

The one with plants in it was minimum heat to 32 degrees to keep the less hardy perennials happy over winter. To all: to be honest, I'm actually sort of glad that it happened since it made the decision process much easier. The idea of a Cravo is far more exciting than the hurt of losing a couple of old poly houses. Building it in February will be the trick.....

Ernie, you have a very possitive outlook on this situation, Good for you. I have been growing in greenhouses for 40 years and have never seen drifting do that. Amazing. February, not always a very cooperative month to put up a green house but you never know, you might get lucky and have a week long warm spell. Keep us posted on you adventure.. Good luck!

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

Yikes, "that's gotta hurt". Well, atleast you didn't have a fire like I did. Looks like with quite a bit of work they can be straightened. I wish you luck in fixin' them up - sorry it was snow like that.
