Just ran across this on yahoo group.

Very cool....wish there were more varieties available commercially.

Thanks for the info! Most exciting and bound to renew the interest!

Chris North's work is wonderful! I wish more of his lilies were available. Barbara and Bronwen are two that particularly appeal to me, that I haven't seen available. Is the Lily Garden really the only source?
The website is wonderful. Thanks for sharing it.

These lily sites have a habit of hiding themselves.

I like some of the 'North ladies', but the one that really made me go 'oh wow!' was Marie North. Very good contrast with the deep brown anthers.

Thanks for the look in pard.

A bit of trivia about Dr. North: he started his career hybridizing cabbages and brussel sprouts with the intent of improving the breeds for the Scottish climate. This from the recently published 2005 Lily Yearbook of the NALS.

Thanks for the link! These hybrids have been some of the ones I've wanted most from The Lily Garden. Recurved, down-facing blooms with fragrance- 2 of my favorite qualities in lilies! I've also considered the L.langkongense hybrids mixture they offer. It amazes me that many Dr.North's hybrids are in danger of being lost from cultivation - makes me want to get my hands on every one I can!

Personally, I believe the reason behind the dearth of these specie-type hybrids is the overwhelming preference of people for big up-facing blooms and the glut of Dutch hybrids that fulfill this preference. And the desire that bigger is better. I like big also but I also especially like the little specie type blooms. Judith Freeman includes this type in her palette of breeding. Who else is currently doing it on a routine basis (and introducing them to commerce)?

I wish the Lily Garden carried more of North's work. I didn't know there were so many to choose from!
Cabbages and brussel sprouts? Wow, how lucky we are that he changed his focus.
Is North still alive? Still hybridizing?
The NALS Yearbooks sound interesting.....

Hi Pard - thanks for the link. I also love Dr. North's lilies and have purchased a few from the Lily Garden. I hope to get as many as I can also.
