Thanks for moving the thread. What was the name of the show...the sponsor was Old Gold cigarettes. I think it was a variety show.

And I remember another cigarette sponsor but can't remember the show..."calling for Phillip Morris"....They must have been favorite shows, but isn't it weird that I can only remember the commercials.

What about the Dinah Shore show?
And Loretta Young descending the staircase.
This could go on forever.

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

I think that was before my time...don't remember those. And how about the first car you owned ? Mine was a chevy nova.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Oh my goodness...first cars, mine was a Studebaker Lark, one that had only been driven by a "little old lady going to church" and it was black. I was so embarrassed. Now I am that little old lady. Finally I embarked on a career so the first car I bought for myself was a 1964 Candy apple red Mustang!! Loved that car.

Cars?

I had a Ford Falcon, 4 door with 3 on the column (three on the tree it was called in those days). After that one I have never had a Ford again, not that it was bad or anything but it just never happened.

Does anyone remember the Loretta Young episode where half of her face was scarred and was only shown at the very end? That one haunted me for a long time.

Flemingsburg, KY(Zone 6a)

You brought back some memories for me too....
Like the times that me and my cousin used to argue over who could sing the best Elvis or Ricky Nelson, I thought Elvis and she thought Ricky
Don't know how I even knew about Elvis, didn't even have a tv then!!!!!!
About my first little transistor radio, listening to the beatles...
What about them GO-GO Boots. I thought I was something else when I got them! HaHa

Would you believe I still have Elvis bubble gum albums....had the whole set until my dog ate one.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

I do remember that Loretta Young episode...I can still see that face!
CC, Ted Mack was the one I was trying to remember.
My best friend had a Ford Falcon. Fifty cents worth of gas would take us all over a weekend!

Scottsdale, AZ

and now fifty cents won't get you off the gas station lot.

have another to share, when asked who my hero is/was, my standard answer has always been Howdy Doody. It's easy to tell someone's age with that one, despite plastic surgery, food genes or what have you

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Loved Howdy Doody and Clarabelle and Princess Summer Fall Winter Spring! Loved them!

Still remember the song, too.

I hope you will allow me to jump in here. Does anyone know whose legs those were sticking out of the cigarette box? I'll be back in a few minutes with the answer.

Scottsdale, AZ

knew at one time but old timers disease acting up and can't remember

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

I remember the legs, but cant remember who it was.
But I do remember the go go boots, had 2 pairs, white and navy!

Scottsdale, AZ

I found a pair of white ones, they were some sort of vynal I'm sure, lacy and stretchy too. They went all the way up like the buccaneer boots, but I wore them folded them down to below the knee like a cuff. I thought they were really cute at the time. . . what was I thinking?

In those days, the boots were worn with HOT PANTS. Yes, I wore them then and wore them well too I might add. Today, the girls wear shorter short shorts and they all seem to say PINK on the butt. What's that all about, I'm almost afraid to ask.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

The boots were vinyl, and the hot pants were usually crushed velvet!!
Pink refers to Victoria's Secret stuff, my daughter just informed me while she rolled her eyes and shook her head...like why would I ask such a question.

Mesilla Park, NM

Hope you don't mind me joining in,

Hotpants..lol. boy do I remember those, they did look cute at the time.. hiphuggers, remember those, I wore those to a Credence Clearwater Revival concert, with one of those blouses you tie up over your belly button and have those frilly long sleeves.

Now Clogs were my thing..lol. thought they looked cool, little did I know!!

I also had a Ford Falcon, wrecked it the first time I tried to drive, guess I should have gone to Driver's Ed... before trying to shift and drive in snow.. backed right into the neighbor's truck had to pay 50.00 for damages on his vehicle.

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

At my school when the mini skirts came out we weren't allowed to wear them. If your dress or skirt looked short they made you kneel down and if it didn't touch the ground they pinned toilet paper to the bottom. No wonder I'm dysfunctional, I was brought up that way..lol.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Remember when hip huggers and bell bottoms came out? And now it's almost impossible to find any pants that aren't "low riders". I literally can't wear any of those, no matter what the size or fit. I'm reduced to wearing what very few pants or jeans I can find that have the stretchy waists. Back in the sixties, I was very skinny. Now my deriere is way too big!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Some of us remember going to school in the 50's and not being allowed to wear jeans or slacks to school.
I still want Nap to tell us about the legs in the cigarette pack or Hey Jude..who was that?

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

Yeah Linda, now I look for tops that go to my knees.

Scottsdale, AZ

I remember going to school (high school) wearing a kilt which was THE thing right then. It was too warm that day and rather than sweat, I took off my tights and tried to wear it barelegged. I was sent to the office, parents called, mother picked me up and I was sent home for the rest of the day to face my father at dinner that night too. The kilt disappeared from my closet never to be seen again. Mind you this was a public school to boot.

times have changed. Now I live here in the desert and kids go to school not half but more like 3/4 naked. boys and girls

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Jude, remember those safety pin things that held the kilt together. I no longer have the kilt, but still have the pin. Way cool!! And I agree about the naked kids of today. I saw way too many belly buttons last school year.

Scottsdale, AZ

yes, I had the large safety pin holding the kilt together that infamous day but it went the way of the kilt.

if all I saw were belly buttons, I would be ok with that. man! sound like a fuddy duddy here, but there's just so much of another person's body I care to see in public. when the division of flesh behind is visible and the beauty shop has to visited for a waxing, it's gone too far in my book.

reminds me of my mother saying sweet 16 parties were over the top in my day and that nothing was left for the weddings. but in those days were supposed to save' 'ourselves too. Another idea that went by the wayside.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

You are right, and you said it much better than I.

Christmas Cactus...you will remember this one:
It's Howdy Doody time
It's Howdy Doody time
It's time to watch the show
So, kids, let's go!

I switched from the Princess Summer Fall Winter Spring outfit right into mouse ears.

Hard to believe you can remember all that. Annette was my favorite also. Can't remember the serials, though. Maybe they didn't make it to KY.

Do you remember the Sparkle Plenty dolls?

This message was edited Dec 10, 2006 11:05 AM

Scottsdale, AZ

did anyone else ever see the 'poor pitiful pearl' doll? since I was the square peg that never fit round holes, that was what I got rather than a barbie. I also had a shelf of 'storybook' dolls which I was NOT permitted to play with, just look, don't touch. Of course, I did touch and comb their hair which ruined the 'do', undid their clothes which was sewn on not snapped or velcro so I did NOT get away with it.

My 5 year old granddaughter got a suitcase of every dark haired Barbie, or whatever their names are, last Channukah since I don't want her to grow up thinking the BLONDE bombshell is the standard. Of course, I think she should set her own standard for everything.

There were TWO Old Gold dancing cigarette packs. First just the adult legs, and later a child with her when OG came out with a lighter cigarette.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Sparkle Plenty was a character in the Dick Tracy comic strip series. Long blond hair made of a sort of heavy crochet thread. Of course when combed, it straightened to a mess of fuzzy strings. So I braided it.
I did have the Pitiful Pearl, Jude, and never had a Barbie, but also don't remember ever wanting one. I had one Little Red Riding Hood doll, and a Dydee Baby, also known as the Red Cross doll. Still have that one, and a Mdme Alexander bridesmaid doll. And that ends my doll stories since I rarely played with them.

Darius, whose legs were they?

Scottsdale, AZ

Jeanne Snow?

Scottsdale, AZ

Gloria Vestoff and Jeanne Jones Snow. too

Most of the shows you watch on TV are new, to me. I was born during the Depression and I can remember "watching" the radio. We did that, you know. Jack Benny and the like. Believe me, there's nothing, absolutely nothing like tap dancing on radio. Yes, they did that. Also, I had an aunt who played bridge on radio. riveting! To watch radio you had to have a wonderful imagination. My husband and I can remember when we were young he in WI and I in Houston - and listened to the Green Hornet, Little Orphan Annie, Jack Armstrong (All American Boy), Henry Aldrich - all those goodies. And we sent in coupons to get such things as Edgar Bergan's Charlie McCarthy. (Wish I had saved mine - understand they're worth a fortune now.) Secret Decoder Rings. Yes, those were the days........... Oh, yes, we had talkies (movies). My DM used to love Shirley Temple and her movies. She wished I had that lovely curley hair. She used to take "me" to the movies so she could see Shirley Temple and was embarrassed to go by herself.

Ann

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

You just brought up another great memory...Shirley Temple movies! Loved them. The Little Colonel, remember that?

My memories of radio are not as clear. But I remember "watching" it, and wanting tap shoes.
