No photos to share--but our first snow storm here in Chicago has caused considerable damage to the thin and graceful branches of my beloved smoke bush. Several main branches have been split and the bark is stripped down several inches along the main stems. I could use some pruning advice from the experts. Do I act now--or wait. The snow is beautiful but there is certainly a price to pay.
thanks.
Snow and Ice damage
I don't consider myself an expert, but I have an opinion if that counts :o) If you can get out there, I'd cut them down now. Smoke bushes can take pruning down (also known as coppicing) every year if someone prefers them to stay small. You don't want to do that now, but just get the damaged parts off. They're dormant now, so it won't hurt them. I'm about 2 1/2 hours SW of Chicago, we got 18 inches and we're still trying to shovel our way out.
