CLOSED: CGs LMW Seed Swap 2006_2 listings

(Zone 7a)

One thing about the difference between the Latin and common names for plants is that there can be only one Latin name per plant. But common names can refer to all kinds of plants.

For example, look at all the different plants that DG's PlantFiles says can be hibiscus: http://davesgarden.com/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=hibiscus&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search The ideal solution here would be for #12. dorothy 2006 to click on that link and tell us which one most closely resembles the one from which she collected seed. Without further input from her, we cannot match up a Latin and/or a cultivar name with the common name she gave us.

So here's what I'm doing to help Connie. I'll match Latin, common and cultivar names where I can and also, I'll put the DG PlantFile hyperlink beside the plants where possible so that Connie can look at those.

If there's a different way you'd like for me to do this that would be more useful to you, let me know.

Connie, I'll dmail you tonight whatever I get done when I quit for the evening.

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

How ever is easiest for you :o) Will be fine with me...
FrauSnow dmailed me and said she is going to edit her list to the seeds she is going to send... So skip hers...

dorothy2006 is not a subscriber, you can skip hers and I already have roose's seeds so skip that one too....

got the real name for the devils claw and that has been taken care of :o)

Okay, I am working with what I have so far, and matching what I can...

Blue your a doll Thanks,

Connie

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Hey there! Been watching my alma mater, University of Montana, roll on in the Division I-AA playoffs. OK, bluespiral, I'm working now. Do we post or email them to Connie? (And believe it or not, I know the Latin names of 90% of these lists off the top of my head. Couldn't tell you my birthday half the time but could rattle off half-a-dozen names of bamboo types ....)

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

LOL summerkid, I am glad someone knows them :o)

Dmail the lists and I will get cracking on them as soon as I can...

Both of you BIG ((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))))))

and don't be surprised if Santa sneaks something to you :o)

Connie

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

Well POO, I reached my limit of edits. grrrr

Oh speaking of edits

didn't know if you knew it or not, but when you do an several edits on one post, you can scroll down and remove any of the other extra - (This message was edited Dec 1, 2006 10:31 AM) off your posts... to keep it short..

Well I really hate to do this, but I have got a spliting headache, so I am going to take a couple (bottles lol) of advil and go to bed.... jk, will only take one bottle, honest injuns :o)

I hope you all have a great night and day tomorrow.

Niterz, Connie

(Zone 7a)

I had started a list to post here of ambiguous common names with PlantFiles links that the person who listed them could click on and then tell us which kind resembled what he/she had. never mind.

will start again in am with Becky. Connie, I noted your changes. Summerkid, you're probably going to be finished before I figure out what I'm doing - LOL How about we dmail our work to Connie and do our kibitzing via dmail? At my level of Mrs. Magoo-hood right now, we could really clog up this thread.

g'night

Boy, those DG PlantFiles really rock! If you click on the PlantFiles tab, and then click on the button that says "Click here to search for plants", it's amazing how much information you can get with just a teensy little bit of input. DG folks have really put together a very comprehensive encyclopedia. Those of you who haven't tried it - give it a whirl. Thank you, Dave.

(PS - www.wikipedia.com makes a nice complement to DG PlantFiles)

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

For the "wants" I have the following:

Love in a puff
Dahlia Bishop's Children
Tall Zinnia's mixed
Zinnia-Envy
-Desert Sun

Love Lies Bleeding-Pony Tails red and green mix
Linaria-Flaming Passion
-Fairy Bouquet mix
Annual Phlox-Peppermint Candy
-Creme Brulee
-Watercolor Memories
Cosmos-Candy Stripe
-Bright Lights (enough for 3)
-bipinnatus-pink with a crimson center zone
-Cosmic Yellow (changed--thought I had orange)
That's 15 but I surprisingly found after going through all my seeds and the wishlist that I could list 30 or so items that I had so I'll throw in some other stuff. I've only got a small area to garden in so I just need enough to start my WS. I haven't even started buying seeds from the new catalogs I've started getting:LOL:

Susan51 - if you want you can go a head and mail yours to me.

Everybody,
I dmailed Susan (9kittymom) and she replied back to me

Quoting:
I just had to have my 18 year old kitty Strypurr put down. She got sick yesterday at 2pm and I held her in my lap for 26 hours until she got so bad we had to take her in. The reason I didn't take her in yesterday was because we are iced and snowed in and couldn't get out of the driveway.
DH finally dug a path out this afternoon, and when the poor baby gave a cry, I couldn't stand it and we took her in. I am not handling it very well.
I was wondering if it would be a big mess up for you if I dropped out of this. My heart just isn't in it.
Susan
=^..^=

So we have lost one of our members to the swap... I know exactly how she feels and I understand completely...

Connie

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Connie, I'll be glad to send some extras so you can send her some seeds anyway. Maybe that will cheer her up a little bit.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

Connie, I've included a bunch of extras too--so please pass them on to Susan. I had to put down my 12 year old boy Oreo in July so I can understand how she feels. Maybe the surprise package will lift her spirits a bit:)

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

connie, i don't see her want list. what was she wanting?

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

We should send everything on her want list if possible.

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

Barb, her want list would be on the first thread. I took it off this one so I wouldn't get confused, but left it on the other one... The link to the other thread Barb is on the first post above :o)

You guys, you know they say great minds think a like ;o)
Just put 9kittymom on all the seed packs you are sending her, and I will mail them out to her with a card in the envie for her from our swap... If you want to send a little note along, I will enclose it with the seeds...

I am off to lala land, you all have a great night.

Connie

Kalama, WA(Zone 8b)

I feel so sad for Susan (9kittymom). I have cats too and have lost a few over the years. I get very close to mine too and mourn their loss as much as any other family member.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

I have a question. Can I go ahead and mail in the seeds I have to share now or are we waiting for a "cue".

Also, in the original instructions for the envelope it said

"Be sure to write on the out side of your envelope CGs LMW Seed Swap. and your user name and number in the lower left hand corner"

I know my user name but what's my user #?

Sue G.

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

Hi Sue, you number is next to your name # 23. CheerMom - Sue :0)

Connie

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i am so glad you cleared that up for me cheer mom. i didn't know either what my "number" was.

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

Sorry you all, I just figured you would see the numbers next to your names and know... Thats what I get for thinking rofl... I have always been told, that was a dangerous thing lol...

Connie

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

no problem connie. communication is an art and most of us have lost it. now that computers are bringing back the written word we will all get better out of necessity i am sure. lol.

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

Hi Aline, received your envelope today, and ewwww that claw is ugly rofl... If it is all the same to you, I am not going to forward it... Just the seeds :o) Makes the envie to bulky and weighty :o)
I took a couple pictures of it, so you all can see what a Devil's Claw pod looks like... UGLY

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Rockton, PA

I can't believe you got my package already, Connie. I sent that out Saterday afternoon.
I got the devils claw in a trade last year and wondered where it got it's name then when I saw the seed pods I knew why. It is a very smelly plant, about 30" high and 36" across. Flowers remind me of an orchid.
Daturas have a cool seed pod too.
I wondered about the number thing, even went to my "page" and looked for a number, then saw the list.
