'Sam' blooms today

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Today was the first flush for 'Sam'.

This was a very welcome sight (and scent) on our first day of 22 degrees, and sleet and snow...

'Peaches and dreams' picked today, of all days, to bloom, also...

How YUMMY!! Very pretty.. I know I would just faint if I saw that in my yard.. It gives me chilly willies it is so exciting! LOL

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I smelled it before I saw it...

I was frantically packing the greenhouse with as many plants as I could squeeze in there, since the sleet was due in a few hours, and kept smelling something wonderful.

I finally took a minute to look for the source and was very pleasantly surprised to see not just one, but five buds on Sam.

I'll try to take another shot of it, when they are opened more. I just thought it looked really pretty in this stage, because it looked two-toned with the yellow on the inner skirt, and pink on the outer skirt...

Hey, I am not familiar with this one...what a delight! Very cool picture.
Please take an extra sniff for me, I think it wil be 6 or 7 months before I can smell anything like it again, lol.

Fancy meeting you here Taylor! Looking so good!

I have never seen 'Peaches and dreams', can you post a picture?
thanks

Virginia Beach, VA

Is there a nursery where I can purchase these fancy varieties? thnak you, Bellie

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Bellie-
I've seen them on ebay here and there. I've not seen any circulating in nurseries, yet.

Kell-oops!...I'm in YOUR stomping grounds over here, aren't I?, lol...well, I just never come over here, because I don't normally have anything to share. I occasionally come over here to lurk and see new creations, like fluffles! Omgosh!

And, basically lament over how full and healthy everyone's brugs are...this is our third drought year in a row, here in N. Tx., and we are STILL on water restriction(only allowed to water one day a week, or fined heavily).

So, to me being able to see blooms like this, in my own garden, is a real treat. I've not had any blooms all summer. And, I think these are the first ones I've had, since last winter. They seem to be so relieved to have a break from the heat, and to have some humidity, that they kinda go nuts. You can see the variegated one has no foliage, except for the top, where it is bunching up, because it is filling in so fast, lol...

Guess I goofed the name up. It is peaches n cream, not dreams. But, hey? Wouldn't that be a great name if these two crossed?, lol...

Do y'all (yes, I'm from Tx.) think that I could cross these two? I've heard doubles need to be crossed with singles, so would this work?

(don't know why the photo is looking so tiny, but should enlarge when you click on it...)

Wow! That Sam is wonderful!

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Is that second picture enlarging for everyone?...

Those 'Sam' blooms are not tiny, ...that peaches n cream is just really loooong...I've not measured, but I'm guessing it is a weird 18-20 inches, or so.

Sam is so pretty Taylor. Nice to see you over on this forum.

just beautiful Taylor.

Hi Patricia!

Thank you, ladies! I know you all have forests of these things, lol...so, anyone know if these two could cross?

I am so glad you have come on over. You should visit us on occasion, we can have fun on this forum too. LOL. You started with some great brugs. Are you hooked? Brugs and water restrictions is a tough combo though. I have been on water restrictions too in the past, oh how I hate it.

As far as your dream match. Gee, I do not know for sure. When you use a variegated for a Mom I know the babies are usually albino and die fast. I assume it is true if you use it as pollen donor also but I do not think I have seen here where someone reported their results. You may get some all green babies. I say try it. You will learn a lot even if it doesn't work out. And then let us know. LOL. Also the pollen could be sterile. I really can't remember hearing. I am trying to remember if I had ever used Maya for crossing and I really can't remember that far back. I have used Maya as a Mom though.

Do you have a PINK you can use the pollen from? That would help you on the way to getting more PINK doubles.

Quoting:
are you hooked

Quite honestly, I USED to be...I tried collecting every single one!, lol...then, I had a scare, and Monika suggested I trash, or burn a few,lol... and that really slowed me down to a dead halt. I then started getting rid of them. I only saved the peaches n dreams and a double white one named 'Species'(of all names, sheesh).

It wasn't until the double pinks made it to the US that I became re-interested. A dear sweetheart felt sorry for me not being able to get one, and she sent me some.

Quoting:
Do you have a PINK you can use the pollen from?
Nope... I sure don't...I have only got these two in bloom right now, and nothing else. 'Species' is the only one close to blooming and it is a double white, so it wouldn't work.

So, should I try to just pollinate Sam with peaches, and not bother pollinating peaches? Would it be better to polliante Sam with itself?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

They do not self pollinate, Taylor. So sad. You need 2 different varieties. I am about out the door for the weekend or I would send you some PINK pollen. My husband is yelling at me. If you can wait till Monday (have more buds on it) I can get some out.

I wouldn't bother with pollinating P & C unless you need the practice.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

that flower sure is pretty, next year I hope to have some doubles, maybe even a triple *LOL*
