Look at this at a nearby home.
It's been very warm.

Autumn Cherry blossoms
Prunus subhirtellia autumnalis. A real genetic freak, but a welcome one. I noticed a plant in full bloom yesterday. I think it'll get a thorough zapping tomorrow!

I had one at my old garden. It was one of my most prized trees. In Michigan, it bloomed quite uncommonly in the fall -- most years nothing. But I remember one December it was virtually in full bloom for 2 weeks. Worth it for that alone. I have planted one just this fall at the new place too, but it did not bloom. Maybe next year. We are supposed to have a mild winter in Michigan, so maybe even during the winter....
Andy, another beautiful pic - a perfect entry for Photo of the Week at People, Places & Plants??? :)
This is an old tee, an original planting by the first owner of the 40 year old house. His daughter now owns the house and told me that it bloomed in mid January one year.

Your photography... as always... very beautiful. We still have your snake as desktop wallpaper on one of the computers here. It's not likely to be changed any time soon either as my son loves your snake.
Here's what I think RCN is referencing-

What a great tree! And thanks for the link Equil, that is a fantastic resource for people in that neck of the woods. I'm envious, did you see the list of garden centers by state?
Thanks Equil. I submitted it. What's to loose. lol.
Andy P
I could easily come up with about 50 photos of yours ranging from insects to snakes to plants that should be submitted and I wouldn't even have to do much more than a DG search for Sarahskeeper and click on the first 50 links. Your posts are littered with all the good stuff. Decumbent is another one who gets enviable whites in his shots. There are some phenomenal photographers amongst our ranks and you'd be way up at the top of the list with somebody named Rankin and Magpye in my book. I'm very visual and I like all photos posted by people. Let's face it, there are people who take photos like you do... and then there are people who take photos like me.
Equil, you are too kind. There are some far better photographers here than me.
Like you, I'm visual. Since I've started snapping pics, I almost 'need' a shot to go along with my posts. lol.
I'll admit to using PhotoShop but only for cropping and sharpening, usually.
The DG photo contest opens today, we will see some wonderful shots from all over the world. I submitted 19 pics. The total count is near 1000 this year and that's with a max of 2 per category. It will be very interesting.
Andy P
Hey! Where's a link to that contest?
Equil, http://davesgarden.com/contest/2006/
Edited to say that the voting is now open.

I found it. I have just surfaced after voting. Holy cow. Tough. The hardest time I had was figuring out which one photo to vote for in vegetables of all categories.
What a beautiful tree. Is it becaus e it has been so warm that it is flowering now or doe sit do that normally. I thought Cherry trees flowered in the spring.
Although it is my understanding that where a cheery tree is geographical located would generally be the primary determining factor of when it blooms, other variables enter the equation that can trick the tree. I suspect what happened here is that it prematurely bloomed because it hit its chill unit quota. We had an unseasonably cold fall followed by unseasonably warm temps last week in the 60's and I suspect MA experienced some of the very same weather conditions which evidently were ripe for some fruiting trees to break bloom prematurely. I get this feeling that his cherry tree received some false end of winter signals.
Prunus subhirtella autumnalis almost always blooms in the fall. That's what it does. That's why people buy it. Hence the varietal name "autumnalis." In Japanese, the name (jugatsu-zakura) means "cherry of the tenth month." Its first mention in literature places it in commerce in Japan to at least 1841. Long autumn warm spells will always produce bloom of varying profusion, although spring's flush is typically much fuller. (All this info came from "Japanese Flowering Cherries" by Wybe Kuitert.

Well my saucer magnolias got confused (again), good thing they didn't bloom again, only buds.
Cool! The only cherry trees I have here are natives save one Yoshino Cherry. I did have a few plants blooming out of season after that cold snap followed by the 60F temps. My Van Houtte Spirea comes to mind as those are right by the walk way and I've never noticed them blooming so late in fall so they stuck out like a sore thumb.
Andy, sorry, I thought maybe you might have seen this http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/674236/ - I was prompting you to submit one of your wonderful photos. It's a great magazine, especially for you "nor-easters" - hoping you're on your way to a free subscription :)
Deb, I missed that thread, probably because I get enough magazines already. I did send the above pic in and I saw your pic and read the text but didn't connect it with you. Had I made the connection, I would have dropped your name, maybe. Paul responded to encourage me to submit more pics. I've never seen the show.
Andy P
Deb, Paul already posted my pic on his site. It's below yours. He's fast.
Andy P
Andy, Paul "IS" fast! Had a response within the hour when I submitted mine! Happy to see your photo there...It appears this is a fairly new feature of their website and you should definitely send more to him, I'm sure their readers would appreciate your talents :) Unfortunately I believe the show on HGTV has been discontinued :(
I am really sad to hear People, Places, and Plants has been discontinued. In my opinion it was the only gardening show left on tv that wasn't filled with fluff. (Light bulb moment) We could do a garden show that highlighted different DG members properties ;) Now lets see who would make the perfect host?? kt
