Photos don't really do justice to the twisting pattern of the lightning damage

Whoa, bummer the tree got hit but those are incredible photos. I suppose this all could have been avoided if you had been out there watering it with your garden hose before the storm hit. I have to tell you that silly as it may seem, I read that thread about watering trees and I did go out and I did water one of my largest oaks that was within reach of the garden hose.

Luckily it is only a green ash and not mine either.

Willis,
Very cool photos. Do you think the lightening was traveling the path of least resistance? Why did it swirl around the tree like that? kt

I don't know if I have the wrong song stuck in my head, but nobody seems to get the tune I typed to the electric slide. When I re-read my post it makes no sense at all. So here are some actual lyrics to the hideous song bouncing around in my head.

Some say it's mystic
It's electric
Boogie woogie, woogie
You can't resist it
It's electric
Boogie woogie, woogie

To answer your question, I am assuming the spiralling shape is just a result of how that tree grew and the actual path of its xylem from the branch tip that was struck by the lightning to the roots. Then again I know diddly squat about many things so I could be as wrong as wrong can be.

willis,
Actually, the name of the song is Electric Boogie and it is performed by Marcia Griffiths. I have the CD and it's a great dance song. It is a terrible song, in that once the song is in your head, it's there for a while. (thanks, dude, now it will be days before I can get it out of my head (:o)

Geez I have seen several trees that have been struck by lightening to include a few on my place, but I have never seen anything that has come close to that. Awesome photos!!

Mike, you are correct. I think the electric slide is some horrendous line-dance, but glad I can share that haunting song.

Our neighbors oak tree was hit by lightening a long time ago and has healed over. The tree appears to be fine. There was a news story not long ago, I'm thinking over in the quad cities, where a tree was hit by lightening, the lightening traveled down the tree, across the ground and into the house. The house was a total loss. And the people had it up for sale.......

With the bark knocked off that tree like that, the EAB's will be coming for it soon! Lock you doors. LOL
