Another cone thread

Selma, NC(Zone 7b)

I don't have pics but I do have some cones that I think are P. palustris. NC is Loblolly land and these cones are much larger than Loblolly cones so I'm assuming they are Longleaf cones. My mom picked up some that fell in last week's Nor-easter that were not open. I've kept them in the garage and the bottom(or top? where the cone attaches to the limb) part is starting to open up. If I just put these outside in one of my beds will they open up on their own?
She did also get a few already opened for me- I think they are just beautiful and one of my favorite decorations for the house year round.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Pinus palustris - 15-23cm, rough brown
Pinus elliottii - 8-16cm, glossy nut-brown (unlikely, but not impossible as a planted tree)
Pinus taeda - 7-13cm, pale brown

If you keep them in a warm sunny window, that will open them up the fastest. No need to put them outside, they will keep better indoors. When they are fully dry and open, pop them in a plastic bag in the deep freeze for 3 or 4 days, to kill off any wood-boring insects that might be in them (not something you want in the house!)

Thanks for the tips Resin. Been wondering the best way to de-bug them too.
