Hoyas Surviving in Cooler Temperatures

Tempe, AZ(Zone 9a)

I was introduced to Hoyas this summer and have since amassed quite a number of them. Yes, I am an addict already! Temperatures are supposed to drop to the high 30's this week so I just brought them all indoors. I'm curious to know how much they will tolerate in the lower temperatures. Last night it was in the low 40's and they are fine, I just don't want to take any chances. Temperatures in the Phoenix metro area don't drop too much colder than 32. I do have a covered patio and wonder if they would be okay outside under the roof. Thanks in advance, Cindy

It was in the 80's a little over a week ago. Night time temps will only hover around freezing a few times during the winter. I had my "frost blankets" out only three times last year.

Great information on that link. Thank you for sharing. I just wish Awanda in Phoenix said where she would keep them during our 115+ summers! That's another dilemna I have.

Thanks all! Cindy

Hey Cindy, Be careful about that Awanda, I'm surprised she hasn't been on to tell ya to bring them on over to her greenhouse. You two are very close to each other, she is in Mesa. I know that she keeps them in her GH with an evap cooler on them in the summer. Sounds like for this week you should leave them indoors, although Marcy is in California and leaves her's out in a cold snap. This is the time of year that I would love to live in your area, but your summers are way to hot for me.. Good luck with your hoya's, and welcome to the Hoya Forum.

My husband just put in a misting system in the center of my greenhouse... When the days are really hot (80s) it gets toasty in the GH and just misting the leaves cools the plants (and me) down and they are really liking it!!!!

Prescott, AZ

Carol how long are you running your misters? Do you set them to come on for so long every hour or so, or do they run continuosly?

Just brought all my hoyas in with frost forecast. First time since I moved here. There are other plants that may bite the dust but the only ones I panicked about losing were the hoyas.

Long Beach, CA

I went out and brought a few more in for the next few days are supposed to be quite cold at night. I still have all the hardiest ones out there though. However, it is NOT supposed to freeze here in Long Beach. It was around 40 this morning about 4:00 AM so that is still not too bad for the tough ones I find. I also keep them a bit dryer when it is this cold. I saw several that looked like they were drying out on top, but just left them go for now.

Oh gosh, I feel so bad for everyone that is not used to freezing temps. All I can picture is Marcy's beautiful Olive tree and all those hoya's hanging. I hope that all your hoya's make it through this week. It's supposed to start warming back up soon.
Stellapathic what are the night time temps supposed to be for you?

Tempe, AZ(Zone 9a)

I grabbed a basket and pulled up all my hoyas, grabbed all the hanging baskets and pots and brought them indoors. My sewing room is now a greenhouse! Thanks for all your heartfelt advice. Next year, I'll put them all in my greenhouse! Good night and good luck...........c

Tami...an automatic system wouldn't really work because we have lots of cloudy rainy days ... we would be adjusting it too much-and the gh is about 1/4 miles from the house. I have a valve I turn on at the opening to the greenhouse....and I let it run until I see that the leaves on the 'outside' (furthest away from the center where the spray comes from) are wet. It doesn't take long...the heads are set on 10' centers. In the winter, with the way the sun comes over the gh, I won't use it too much, because the outside plants on one side don't get much light and are usually damp....but on the dry hot days I will use it.... It is just lowering the temps of the plants....

The weather is so crazy.Tomorrow it will be 70 and at 3:00 they are telling us it will turn 32 in just a matter of two hours.I have propane heat and the rest of the week 30's at night.I have one hoya that lost so many leaves and I went threw it yesterday and it was a vine that died in the plant.....I bought one of those little buddy heaters and it keeps the greenhouse in the high 50's that alll I can do for them..I think we should all move to Hawaii !!! it will be surviving winter once again!!

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Same here Dianne.....it was 73 when I went to bed and this morning it is 45 and dropping. Supposed to hit 27 tonight, which is nothing for a transplanted northerner but will make things difficult around here for the greenhouse and the roads. It is raining and I do hope it stops before the freezing temps. I still can't believe that the response to sleet and ice down here is sand....I realize it doesn't happen very often but still....sand gives a false sense of confidence to inexperienced bad weather drivers. I have a guest professor that is supposed to be flying in from Colorado today, I am betting the flight will be delayed. I do hope the weather clears up some though. I am worried about my greenhouse maintaining temperature the next few nights, since I extended it the heater I have doesn't seem to be enough. Thought about going to buy a new one but don't have time today. Crossing fingers here.....

I've found some of the Hoya are tougher than others. I have two old, huge ones that I leave hanging on the front porch. If we have a frost, I wrap them with sheets or set them on a bench up against the house and cover with sheets. They don't seem to mind even into the mid to high 20's. If it gets colder or stays cold longer, I move them to an enclosed porch where the temp hovers in the 40's - 50's. I find bright light is more important than temp and of course water far less. If they stay in dim light, they start shedding leaves. It gets colder here than Az but we see many 100 + days in summer.

I brought my hoyas in, but I covered my other plants with sheets. I am not taking any chances.

There may have been frost here in Cambria this morning, but not at my place. If at all it would have happened in the canyons and I live on a hill. It supposedly got down to 30 degrees here last night but there are so many microclimates in this town I'd say the temps ranged as much as 10 degrees......some places 30 and some places 40. Everything looked fine and dandy this morning and now the sun's out and it's a gorgeous 64 degrees.
