Thanks, Bub.

Forgot...that's so neat that you have Three grandchildren!!! I can only hope! We waited a long time for this one. I told my daughter that if they didn't hurry up....the baby and I would be learning to eat soft foods together.....because I'd be in a nursing home....

-South Central-, IL(Zone 6a)

LOL!! My #4 will be here last of May or 1st of June. We don't know yet what 'kind' it is. :)

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Just getting to computer after chasing baby around house for a couple of hours. Can't imagine having 3, much less 4!!! We put his Christmas dinosaur galoshers on him and let him dance around the tree when he was supposed to be going to bed. 'Parents caught us when they got back early! Too cute.
I'll send link to nursery tour to your d-mail. It's long and it may be boring to everyone else over at Mid-South. You can decide if it's what you're looking for.

Hello All!!! (yes...long time no see!!!)

I enjoyed reading this thread! I'm giving finals Mon - Wed and then I'm off for 2 weeks!!!

I didn't realize how much of my time teaching that extra class would take (did I tell y'all about it? They called me in August and asked if I would take an extra class and made an extra 8k....so silly me....I went for it. Never again!!!) I HATE it that I have no time for anything except school! And Eanes is planning to have high school teachers teach 6 next year for NO MORE MONEY!! They are crazy.....many teachers are saying they will quit if the board votes that in....

Anyhow...I was on tonight trying to find a thread about trimming the ugly frozen stuff from my plants. Should I trim now or wait until later? I'm mainly talking about lantana, honeysuckle, and vitex. Sandi....?

So "cool" to see my name mentioned by several of you and not coupled with an expletive! (Just kidding!!) I can't wait for this spring.....yea!!! I've been asked to mentor a student teacher for the spring...which would free up a LOT of my time....hoping...

Connie, I don't know about trimming the rest but the Lantana has hollow stems and if trimmed, water can get in the stems causing rot. Now someone here said it will be o.k. if it has already died down. I do know I killed some in the past and was told that was why...

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I cut mine down following Josephines example and they come back bigger and better each year no problem (lantana that is)

-South Central-, IL(Zone 6a)

I'm in the 'new' zone 8. My lantana has come back for four years in a row. I usually cut it back and cross my fingers that it will come back next year. (Supposedly it's an annual here)

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks for the help! Mine looks like it died....it's ugly and dark...shriveled up leaves. Guess I'll trim it this weekend and see what happens. It grows so fast I really don't care...(except for the COST), because it went from a 6 inch plant to one about 3 feet high and about 6 feet across! (but not the purple ones...anyone know why?)

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

The purple Lantana is more of a trailer and it will not go away, don't worry. I have seen it grow up thru shrubs and bloom late summer, early fall. It doesn't become a shrub itself but is difficult to kill. Some folks consider it invasive.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Nice to see you post Connie. I hope you and your DH are doing well.

-South Central-, IL(Zone 6a)

I don't think I know about a 'purple' lantana. Does someone have a picture?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

The only purple lantana I have - and yes I have tons of it and is grows everywhere - is the trailing lantana. Grows like crazy and mine here never goes dormant but even blooms on the South side with ice on the plant... one hard to kill plant.

-South Central-, IL(Zone 6a)

This plant looks similar to verbena. Is that true?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

No.. looks like Lantana but just runs on the ground over on branches my verbena is great but not too close...

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Here is a picture of Purple Trailing Lantana from the plant files.

Did anyone mention that purple verbena has a pungent odor? I have the purple and the white planted in the hell-strip betweeen the sidewalk and the street. When everything else shuts down in heat of summer, it just keeps blooming. Drought, ice, severe pruning, kindness,...nothing kills it....

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

My purple trailing Lantana has a similar odor to the regular Lantana. Kind of skunky. It is not related to Verbena. This photo is a close up where you can see the leaves and the bloom ( sort of, I hope ).

I wanted to add that in any soil but mine, this plant would be considered invasive. It is a very determined vine. In a hanging basket it is a pretty plant.

The leaf on that could be lantana, and it could be verbena! I'll be happy when I get to meet one face to face :)

Northeast, LA(Zone 8a)

I have both and they do look similar. The verbena bloom is a more vivid purple. My lantana gave up after the third frost. Hopefully it will come back from the root as it is well mulched. My homestead purple verbena is still green. If we have mild weather it will start blooming . That lantana hates wet feet. I've killed several of them finding the ideal place for it.

edited this sorry flowerlady I called you Loretta because I have been posting back and forth with her last night.

If you happen to fly over Austin, look for our backyard. With the weather turning cold, we've left the lights on for you.....

Merae...I think our yard looks bleak at this time of the year. I'm up and ready to go power shopping this morning! Then we're in for the weekend. Have company coming.
I'm already looking forward to planning the front yard after the Holidays. I wasn't going to tell on myself....but....I went to Lowe's to pick up a gift last Sunday. Had to check out the garden center. They had four huge rolling racks filled with landscaper packs by the door with sign, "Entire Rack...$19.99." There were pansies, snapdragons, dianthus, violas, etc. The invoice on each rack side was nearly $400. One rack filled the truck bed, and inside. I've only planted the dianthus, and put the rest in gh till I have a chance to breathe. All but the pansies can go out front because the deer shouldn't eat 'em. DH just shook his head when I drove up.....

Merry Christmas!!!

Bubbles - I go in to Lowes each Sat - all this old prenns they sell for .50 cents to a dollar. I have picked up grape vines, blackberries, russian sage, mums, lavender, and tons of salvias for next to nothing. They will have their trees and shrubs soon too - most for 50%-75% off... it is the only way I buy plants there (or anywhere for that matter unless it is one of those have to have it plants... )

I do that too, but these were fresh....as tho they were ordered and not accepted.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Even better! When I bring something on sale home I have to remind my wife not to look at it right now - wait for next year!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Saw the weather report yesterday and decided I'd better get busy in the yard. Spent the entire morning planting what I bought from Lowe's. The rain started about noon, forcing me to quit, and it's been steady since then. Have four flats of snapdragons left. I'm wondering if I need to fertilize the viola and pansies? I've never planted bedding plants so late in the season. Anyone have any suggestions....
Never made it to the mall....maybe that's a "good thing."
