New Feature

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Dave is creating a new feature for locating nurseries. You should all check it out. Here is the thread http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/672584/ and here is the listing http://davesgarden.com/local/ . I think it's great. Add your nurseries everyone!

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Thanks Anita - I was going to post this yesterday morning but didn't get the chance. Dave works fast!! There is now a tab at the top of the page Go Gardening - anyone can make a suggestion on the first link above.

Edited to change the new name of this great addition to DG.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I don't have any Northeast places to enter, but I have entered some for WI. I think with everyones input this will be a nice feature.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Al, How did you come to be a Northeast forum guy? Was it because you knew Anita & Dena?

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Dave - that is one of life's great mysteries now isn't it. I did basically know the core group of people here from other forums was the reason I stayed. I tried looking once to see if I could find the exact reason and I think it was something with Dena and racoons, but whose trial is this anyway. Because of Andy's feature I probably have posted now in half the regional forums at least once. I do post in the UMW forum when the time is right.

wanted to use the chewbacca defense for Gram :)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

The link is very useful for folks who don't live on Long Island. When I typed in the "within 25 miles" as a distance I ended up with Connecticut. This happens with 90% of online searches by zip codes.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Hey Dave47 - didn't we "officially" move WI into the NE a couple of threads back? If we didn't - then lets take a vote on it - all in favor of adding Menasha, WI to NE raise your mouse and click!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Yank, I raised my mouse and clicked...I think something happened in the office 2 cubes over. maybe I shouldn't do that at work? anyway, I'm for keeping Al, even if he has to register with a fake address. I'm pretty sure there's a Menasha, NY right near me ;0)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Menasha is an old Native American word meaning land of cold winters so Al belongs with us anyhow.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Well I'm staying anyway I guess.

I travel a lot in my work and know of all the places that sell plants within 40 miles or so. Menasha is Indian - can't recall the meaning right now.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I think it's Iroqouis for " Doh!"

I raised my mouse too. Now we should negotiate his fee.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I raised my mouse, after all ......Where would Dave47 be w/out Al???? I shudder to think about it!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I Googled it for fun and the Native Americans called in Menashay - settlement on the island.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Dave47 - WE have to pay HIM?

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Quoting:
Where would Dave47 be w/out Al???? I shudder to think about it!

Wasn't that on Home Improvements??? I'll raise my mouse as long as he keeps the winter weather to himself!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

He would just be another Dave on Dave's Garden. Actually our winter weather has turned nicer lately - which it always does when I am done working outside at work.

Pirl - I have lived on the island part of Menasha, although you could walk across the river to the other side if needed.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Al - long legs or shallow water?

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

It's shallow, the river is split in two as it forms the island. Used to be quite a rapids there before dams were put in long ago.

here's your boring history today about Doty Island - he was from NY to keep you interested Pirl.
http://experts.about.com/e/j/ja/james_duane_doty.htm

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I'm always interested in history, Al. I read every word of the link and now have to hope it comes up on Jeopardy sometime.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I rated the article "not very helpful" because I couldn't figure out why I was reading it (because he retired near Menasha??)

Without Al, I would still be in Guilford,CT.
Although my life would not be complete.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Gram, it was just about 10am that my computer at work went all haywire. Was that you?????

Of course Al belongs here. I just wish we didn't have to share him with the rest of the country. He seems to be posting here less often these days. And in fact, wasn't it you, Al, who goaded me into the Northeast Forum?

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

hmmm..I remember my first dmail from Al - he wanted to know what Ronkonkoma meant...not usually the first question I get asked so it stuck in my memory.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I think I might need to have my attorney present for any further accusations.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

but we luv ya big guy!!! You're part of my Dave's Gang!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Anita - I get a kick out of it when names we're familiar with are mispronounced on radio or TV. One night we heard a host introduce a caller from ron-kon-KOMA. Loved it. Most people think Hicksville simply is a made up name to denote white socks. The other one was a goof by Pat Sajak - Parsippany NJ but it came out par-si-PANNY.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

You know Arlene, so many mispronounce my town the way you phonetically indicated. Even people from Long Island! Or should I say LonGisland [as Dave says, lawnguyland] I always get a kick out of the emails that talk about how you know you're from Long Island when...

You know someone who went to Chaminade.

Jones Beach Theater is the best place in the world to see a concert. CASE CLOSED!

Billy Joel said it best, "Either you date a rich girl from the North Shore, or a cool girl from the South Shore."

What's the big deal about the Hamptons?

You don't go to Manhattan, you go to "the City"

You know the Belt Parkway

You never, ever want to "change at Jamaica..."

You never realize you have an accent until you leave.

You've been to Utopia at least once.

If your parents didn't, your grandparents lived in the city.

At some point in your life you or someone you know has owned an animal that came from North Shore Animal League.

You actually remember when you felt safe swimming at Bar Beach and Hempstead Harbor.

No word ends in an ER, just an AH.

You know the exact point at which Queens turns into Nassau simply on intuition.

You're still waiting for a bridge to Connecticut.

You've tried to use your father's monthly ticket to ride the LIRR. It worked.

No matter what you do, you end up at the diner.

Your distant future might involve the state of Florida.

You've tried to find the Amityville Horror house.

No, you don't want mustard on that burger!

The most exciting day of your summer is when all tickets to every Jones Beach show go on sale.

You know White Castle is terrible for you and the food sucks. But, you periodically "Get the Crave"

You want the Yankees to stay in the Bronx, but would probably go to more games if they moved to Manhattan.

You can order a pizza pie and a soda and people will understand.

When you hear Billy Joel's "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant" you try to figure out what places on Long Island he's talking about.

You know that parts of the Godfather were filmed on LI.

At some point in your life, you've gone clamming.

You've been to the Tanger Outlets and came home with nothing to show for it.

You have or someone you know has fallen asleep on the LIRR and ended up in one of these three places; Babylon, Port Washington or Hicksville.

You think Islip MacArthur airport is cute and you enjoy watching it grow up.

Your parents took you to Nathans or Carvel

You hate the radio commercials for the Dublin Pub

You can correctly pronouce places like Happauge, Commack, Islip, Islandia, Massapequa and Ronkonkoma.

You know the location of 6 malls and a dozen McDonalds and 36 7-11's.

You were upset when all the Roy Rogers turned into Wendys.

You consider nachos and cheese at the Coliseum to be a suitable dinner date.

You actually get these jokes and pass them on to other friends from Long Island.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

My girlfriend lived four houses away from the Amityville Horror, Ocean Avenue, Amityville!

I remember or did or know about almost everything on the list. Billy Joel used to stop by a little bar turned restaurant on South Street, Oyster Bay and play for free!

How about Cutchogue, Mattituck, Aquebogue?

The dropped ER in place of AH is so true! AW instead of R is another one - Eastpawt!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

So you actually do have a Hicksville ----I knew it.

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

Al, I went to Marquette for a couple of years. It was a suburb of trenton, NJ for a while. Moving Menasha to the NE is doable. I had roommates from NY and from MA when I was there. I vote yes.
Also, My sister-in-law lives right on the border of Queens and Nassau. I have seen the dotted line that forms the boundary!
Martha

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Martha - I was 1.6 miles from Nassau County when I was growing up in Queens.

Yes, Al, I lived in Hicksville for 28 years and loved it. A cousin, who grew up in Westchester County, thought it was a joke when he first heard the name of Hicksville but it was named for one of the founders of the area, Valentine Hicks. One of the largest nurseries in Nassau County is Hicks Nurseries.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

It's a great nursery too. I wasn't too thrilled with old man Hicks though. I encountered him when I worked in the emergency room. He pulled the "Do you have any idea who I am??" on me. Didn't put a good taste in my mouth. If it's not added, I'll have to remember to add it to the List here.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I guess you can't mess with the head hick from Hicksville.

So Martha - you went to Marquette in Milwaukee then?

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I can pronounce all but the last L.I. name on your lists! I know the feeling though. Ever since our local Quinnipiac College became a big source of political polls, it's fun to listen to the national media mangle it.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

If Jack's oldest granddaughter hadn't wanted to go there I'd be lost, too!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Don't worry Pirl. We would've found you.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

.........and returned me via ferry, I hope!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Not interested in being a mainlander,eh? Life is good with less bridges.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Our nearest bridges are the Verrazano, the Throg's Neck and the 59th Street Bridge. I'm not fond of any bridges at all since my darling older sisters convinced me bridges would fall apart, while we were driving over them, and I'd drown. Then I was about 7 years old and believed them.

Connecticut once claimed Long Island as part of their turf.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

You should belong to us! Block Island too. Then we are going after Rhode Island!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

RI just doesn't make much sense at all! Can't we put a nice big lake there instead?
