New Feature

Thanks Anita - I was going to post this yesterday morning but didn't get the chance. Dave works fast!! There is now a tab at the top of the page Go Gardening - anyone can make a suggestion on the first link above.

I don't have any Northeast places to enter, but I have entered some for WI. I think with everyones input this will be a nice feature.

Al, How did you come to be a Northeast forum guy? Was it because you knew Anita & Dena?

Dave - that is one of life's great mysteries now isn't it. I did basically know the core group of people here from other forums was the reason I stayed. I tried looking once to see if I could find the exact reason and I think it was something with Dena and racoons, but whose trial is this anyway. Because of Andy's feature I probably have posted now in half the regional forums at least once. I do post in the UMW forum when the time is right.

The link is very useful for folks who don't live on Long Island. When I typed in the "within 25 miles" as a distance I ended up with Connecticut. This happens with 90% of online searches by zip codes.

Hey Dave47 - didn't we "officially" move WI into the NE a couple of threads back? If we didn't - then lets take a vote on it - all in favor of adding Menasha, WI to NE raise your mouse and click!

Yank, I raised my mouse and clicked...I think something happened in the office 2 cubes over. maybe I shouldn't do that at work? anyway, I'm for keeping Al, even if he has to register with a fake address. I'm pretty sure there's a Menasha, NY right near me ;0)

Menasha is an old Native American word meaning land of cold winters so Al belongs with us anyhow.

Well I'm staying anyway I guess.

I travel a lot in my work and know of all the places that sell plants within 40 miles or so. Menasha is Indian - can't recall the meaning right now.

I think it's Iroqouis for " Doh!"

I Googled it for fun and the Native Americans called in Menashay - settlement on the island.

He would just be another Dave on Dave's Garden. Actually our winter weather has turned nicer lately - which it always does when I am done working outside at work.

Pirl - I have lived on the island part of Menasha, although you could walk across the river to the other side if needed.

Al - long legs or shallow water?

It's shallow, the river is split in two as it forms the island. Used to be quite a rapids there before dams were put in long ago.

Anita - I get a kick out of it when names we're familiar with are mispronounced on radio or TV. One night we heard a host introduce a caller from ron-kon-KOMA. Loved it. Most people think Hicksville simply is a made up name to denote white socks. The other one was a goof by Pat Sajak - Parsippany NJ but it came out par-si-PANNY.

You know Arlene, so many mispronounce my town the way you phonetically indicated. Even people from Long Island! Or should I say LonGisland [as Dave says, lawnguyland] I always get a kick out of the emails that talk about how you know you're from Long Island when...

Al, I went to Marquette for a couple of years. It was a suburb of trenton, NJ for a while. Moving Menasha to the NE is doable. I had roommates from NY and from MA when I was there. I vote yes.
Also, My sister-in-law lives right on the border of Queens and Nassau. I have seen the dotted line that forms the boundary!

Martha - I was 1.6 miles from Nassau County when I was growing up in Queens.

Yes, Al, I lived in Hicksville for 28 years and loved it. A cousin, who grew up in Westchester County, thought it was a joke when he first heard the name of Hicksville but it was named for one of the founders of the area, Valentine Hicks. One of the largest nurseries in Nassau County is Hicks Nurseries.

It's a great nursery too. I wasn't too thrilled with old man Hicks though. I encountered him when I worked in the emergency room. He pulled the "Do you have any idea who I am??" on me. Didn't put a good taste in my mouth. If it's not added, I'll have to remember to add it to the List here.

I guess you can't mess with the head hick from Hicksville.

I can pronounce all but the last L.I. name on your lists! I know the feeling though. Ever since our local Quinnipiac College became a big source of political polls, it's fun to listen to the national media mangle it.

If Jack's oldest granddaughter hadn't wanted to go there I'd be lost, too!

Not interested in being a mainlander,eh? Life is good with less bridges.

Our nearest bridges are the Verrazano, the Throg's Neck and the 59th Street Bridge. I'm not fond of any bridges at all since my darling older sisters convinced me bridges would fall apart, while we were driving over them, and I'd drown. Then I was about 7 years old and believed them.

Connecticut once claimed Long Island as part of their turf.

You should belong to us! Block Island too. Then we are going after Rhode Island!

RI just doesn't make much sense at all! Can't we put a nice big lake there instead?
