Love your blue-yellow combo, growin.

The Yellow is Rudbeckia hirta 'Prairie Sun' and the other is Verbena bonariensis taken in Stanley Park near the rose garden. I'm gonna try and find these for my garden this year.

Sandy, You're right LOL, Brantford doesn't sound way as nice as Southern Ontario and for some reason, I don't like everyone to see it, thats just one of my funny quirks :P
Right now I'm at the Library, I work across the street and I'm waiting for my ride...
The downtown is soo seedy, you make eye contact with no-one when walking around.

growin, that is one cool photo of the bananas in snow! When was it taken?

Steven, OK, we'll keep you, along with all your funny quirks..... you don't have too many do you?

The photo was taken in late November. The banana turned to mush but Musa basjoo comes back from the root. There are some people growing it in Ontario. It just needs enough protection to keep the frost away from the root.

Sandy, no I don't have too many :)

Growin, That is a really good photo! I've been wanting to get Musa basjoo for a while.

Steven, LOL

Growin, I remember a pic from a member in Toronto growing banana a while back. But in your pic the plant is so huge it looks so tropical and it seems so at odds with the snow. Like I said, very cool!

We've had some weird weather and this snow happened rather suddenly. They seem to like a cooler growing summer so they're perfect for here. There was a guy in Ottawa who had a Musa basjoo against the house on the south side and he would pile lots of hay and wrap it each year. The ones that aren't protected here do come back but they lose their trunk.

I've got tons of palm seedlings in the front yard if anyone wants some. They are 2 years old and I'd rather dig up the bed and add compost and make it perennials but I don't have the heart to throw them all out.

I remember that picture too, of the banana in Toronto.
I'm on the lookout for basjoo this year, I heard Epic plants is selling it this year.
Canning Perennials also has it and the Musella I've been wanting.

You could try this place too. http://davesgarden.com/gwd/c/1972/

Musella isn't my favourite. It gets spider mite easier than the other bananas and never gets that big here.

growin... I would love a seedling of your palm. That could be fun to grow and if it does well there I am sure it will here. I am sending a d-mail.

Growin - Thanks, I've been thinking of getting a Musella, but if it doesn't do very well for you, it probably won't do well at all for me here. I was looking at Tropic to Tropic a few weeks ago, and they have such a great selection.....Theres so many places I want to order from, I just can't decide which ones...

Musella may not do well for us but may do better for you. We don't get the summer heat/humidity that you do.

Steve, I ordered the Musa basjoo from Canning Perennials last year - this is my first winter with it, so I'll let you know how it does. To protect it I placed a length of Big "O" pipe over it, then stuffed the pipe with leaves. We'll see what happens :-)

What a good idea Ginny! I never thought of using pipe before.
And, yes, please keep me updated on how it does.

I think I might still try the Musella, I just love how it looks!

Steven - off to drool over more plants and seeds
