What catches your eye?

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

I spent 3 days looking at the pictures on AVSA webpage and noted that I'm drawn to heavy variegation. I seem to lean more to pinks but I really like blooms that have several layers of color...blue on white, green edges, etc.I like some fantasies but w/splatters and stripes, not crazy about puffs of colors on dark back ground because they look like their sick..IMO.

I don't care much for straight white blooms but picked several because of their variegation.Wouldn't it be a beauty if someone hybridized a white bloom fantasy..if they haven't already and I just haven't seen it.

Coral's are blah to me also.

Don't shoot me now,'cause I know a lot of ya'll are fans of chimeras but I'm not drawn to them but did note one(forget the name) a pink and white one w/ heavy gold foliage w/dark green veins.

So what makes you go..Oooo-ahhhh!?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Interesting thread, bigred!

Variegation here too...especially mosiac. Really big plants or really tiny plants (I've always had this problem with extremes~lol) I seem to have collected a lot of pink flowers without planning it that way...but my first av was a beautiful periwinkle blue noid. And it was the blue that got me!

I'm at the stage in my av collection where I have lots of new babies grown out that haven't come into bloom yet, so what I think I have might be different than what I really have! I forget a lot so it's always cool to see one bloom and say, "Oh, now I know what I was thinking!!".

Anxious to hear about others :)

Homosassa, FL(Zone 9a)

bigred
goodmorning,
really i like any of them ,its hard far me to pick a favorite,
but i do really like the trails,i love the blue color but only have a few of them.
just give me a violet and i am in hog heaven

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

I am really impressed with variegated foliage as well. Love Blues and pale pinks, fantasy and am partial to ruffled blooms.

But AV's are all beautiful to me.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Oh, and trailers... :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I love them all !
Yes ! There are Av's with white flowers with fantasy CHIMERA'S :))
Some with variegation too !
One I always had my eye one is ; Little Misty Blue (P. Sorano) Single chimera white sticktite pansy/blue stripe, white fantasy. Variegated medium green and ivory. Semiminiature

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

I love variegated foliage. 1st thing that drew me back to AVs was variegated foliage, 2nd thing was red flower! Then I saw yellow flowers and was drawn to them...seems no end to what I think is beautiful.

I was and am drawn to fantasy, how cool is fantasy. Also was not drawn to white, but now have seen so many that are beautiful that I can't ignore them. I wasn't drawn to chimiras at 1st either but now think they are the cat's meow. Ok I am easy, show me a new AV and I am smitten- fickle? Yes I am.

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Let me clarify the fantay on white...I meant fantasy puffs i.e.Jean Pierre Croutea(mis-spelled horribly)on white.

I love the little mini's too but shy away from them on the most part because I know during my busy season I tend to neglect my houseplants and the smaller ones suffer the most quicker.

I love the variegates because they're beautiful in and out of bloom.

So out of all those beauties on AVSA picture gallery(didn't do a count but there was a LOT),I picked 150 then narrowed down the filed to 30 I love to see Santa leave in my stocking(I have long legs...LOL) on christmas morning,to 30:

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

I like variegated foliage, too.
Also Fantasy blooms, blooms with a 'picotee' edge (is that an 'AV lingo' (lol!) term?) and BIG foliage.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Hey, I have Rob's hallucination growing babies right now...and Rob's Slap Happy as a plant. Want me to put something down for you for spring time???

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Heinz's Desert Song (H. Dornbusch) Semidouble-double purple star/variable raspberry and white edge. Crown variegated medium green and cream, heart-shaped, scalloped. Standard
Not a Chimera but beautiful :))
Purple Popcorn Love the name great Vintage sure hope you find it :))
Purple Popcorn (1700) 06/19/1967 (Cook) Double purple. Variegated, pointed, ruffled. Large
You have a super duper great list ! Good luck happy hunting !

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

PlantiMcPlanter,

Ooooo,I would kiss you all over your face...LOL

V_T,
after I went back and looked I realized it was "Icy Hot "that was the chim. I've found about 2/3's of them so far. The Silverglades will be hard since apparently the website is no longer up(you can still get on and veiw flowers)and seems to be located in S.Africa.

P

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

The Hybridizer of Silverglades died . Some Vendors sell them seems most like the hard to find and they are sometimes very exspensive like your wish " Sliver Glades Apples " are fount only on Ebay. I use to have a lot of them and a few years ago was offered them all from a local group grower I could have kicked myself for not taking him up on them. One that grew so great for me and had pretty green edges was Silverglade Streams !

Lindenhurst, NY

What a fun thread.

I just started growing a/v's recently. I am drawn to the purples/blues/lavendars especially the flowers that have a different color edge.

As far as the foliage goes, I usually don't like variegated anything so I like the solid green leaves - and I tend to like the darker leaves. I do have one a/v - it's called Snuggles little dreamer, it has heavy pink variegation in the middle of the plant -- it's beautiful.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Bigred~ I've got markers in them with your name on it! When spring rolls around then we can make a trade :) Fun!! I love this forum...

PS. Thanks for the kissing face offer, too. LOL

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

V_T,
thanks for that info. I'll check out ebay in hopes to find Silverglades. Won't mind paying for a good plant to use for propagation and keep the Silverglades hybrids growing in memory of hybridizer.

How would one go about finding the vintage varities. AVSA seems only to be a list and doesn't give sources for venders...that I've found so far.

maureen,
Hang in there and we'll get you hooked on variegates.I love variegated plants..indoors and out along w/black and gold foilage.

PlantiMcPlanter,
I should have a nice list of av's and a few var.of episcia to offer for trade. If I don't have anything you need in indoor palnts,I have two 20x40 greenhouses full of perennials....but I can still kiss ya all over yer face...LOL

You can also do a search for buying here.
African Violets Search Page

I gave loads of VIntage and rare leaves and plants away on DG's here I bet a lot of people would love to share with you in the Spring :))

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Hey...how come you get two greenhouses??? LOL Sounds like a deal for sure. When I checked things out closer, I have Slap Happy babies growing already! Geeze, it's like a premonition or something.

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Need more greenhouses. I'm a small commercial grower ,retail/wholesale localy.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I'm always drawn to variegated foliage, whether it be AVs or other plants. I like the bicolor blooms and picotee edges, too.

This one was screaming my name at Lowe's today. No clue what it is. This picture is rather dark, but it's deep purple with lime green ruffly edges. Anyone have an idea? I've been looking through the AVSA site, but so far, no luck. I figure if Lowe's sells it, it's probably pretty common and someone here will recognize it.

I went back to list and added names of venders when I found plant. Please let me know if you find venders for others I haven't found source for.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

WOW you got that stunning plant with purple and green foliage at Lowes ! It's beautiful !
Most of the registed Av's with those charastics are very hard to buy and exspensive. Great buy !
Reminds me of Blueberry Mint an AV I grew many of from leaf and gave them people here on DG's anyone have a blooming Blueberry Mint :))
Blueberry Mint (7201) 10/21/1989 (S. Sorano) Semidouble dark blue star, ruffled/green edge, some white. Dark green, ruffled/red back. Standard

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

They had a whole mess of AVs and most of them were the unremarkable pinks and purples and a few whites. There were just two of these purple and green ones, and I grabbed the best one. The other one didn't look so hot. $2.99. Good deal, huh? :-)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh it sure is a great deal and a stunning plant. It may be an Everflorida Space plant. Optimara took seeds to Space for about 6 years and these plants grow larger and bloom all the time.
Your's has more beautiful deep colorful blooms with lots of green than others I have seen though before. Great buy ! Enjoy :))

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I just looked up additional pictures of Blueberry Mint, and I do believe you're right! THANK YOU for the ID!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I don't think it is the real ID of your plant. Sorry it just looks like it. There are many that look alike and many of these plants fount at Lowes, HD and other stores are grown by seed in mass numbers. You can say it's a look-a like but sorry it is still a noid,
Did the pot say Optimara ? Most likly your plant if an Optimara is an Optimara Everfloris plant.
Blueberry Mint is almost a Vintage and hard to find and espensive and sorry you would not find it at Lowes.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Kylee
Most likly " IF Your plant is an Optimara" it is an Optimara EverFloris Plant.
http://www.floriculture.net/selectivegardener/everfloris.cfm?x_cartid=794919694AgfJ351943616
Did the pot have Optimara on it or name tag ?
Other than that the name is just a guess on a Noid which is an African violet plant with no name and sorry these can never be named just Noids look alike :))

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

OH PS if you did buy an Optimara EveFloris plant you got it for greAT PRICE MOST OF THE TIME THEIR $10.00- 12.00 AT LOWES AND ABOUT $25.00 ON WEB SIGHT vENDORS ! OOPS Sorry my keyboard went nuts :))
This plant you bought is so stunning gorgous I would not need a name for it :))
Thanks so much for sharing it !

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I've just done a bit of research, and it says it's grown in Canada, in Ontario (Beamsville or thereabouts). It likely came from Hendriks Greenhouses, so I'm guessing it's a Saintpaulia hybrid, most likely one like this... http://www.gesneriads.ca/saint50.htm

It doesn't really matter though. I just know I love it! :-)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh gosh yes it's a stunning beautiful plant. I would have never been able to pass it by :)) You should put a leaf or two down and grow some babies of this new beauty of your's :))

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Bigred~ Thanks for the kisses ! ROFL I needed them this morning!! And I concede if you are a commercial grower, you get to have greenhouses :) Now I'm really excited about our trade! If you like the crown varigation, would you like "Plain and Fancy" as well? The picture I have of it looks a lot darker than my plant which had a lovely yellowy green look. Allison gave it to me, right Allison?? Maybe she can tell us more about it???

Kylie~ That plant is a knockout! I can't believe your good fortune ...1) It wasn't half dead from Lowes, 2) Your Lowes even carried it in the first place, and 3) You got it SO CHEAP!!!! Who cares if it's a noid, it's absolutely wonderful...

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I have not yet propagated anything successfully from a leaf, although I've never tried an AV. I have one streptocarpella that I tried that way, and it just withered up and fell over. Same with the rex begonias. *sigh*

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh my Plain and Fancy is a rare hard to find Vintage by Ethel Champion ! I was lucky while back to get two leaves in a trade ! I grew many plants and shared them with people here on DG's :)) Last time I saw Nanna post her Plain and Fancy it had grown and the variegation the whole plant was stunning out of this world gorgous ! I know several people have this one and other Vintage I shared Black Ace was another super Vintage .
It is Special to share these Vintage plants to keep them growing in order they do not get lost.
I am so Happy you are sharing them :))
Plain and Fancy (2756) 11/13/1975 (E. Champion) Double pink ruffled star. Variegated, plain, quilted. Large
PS AVSA photos has a nice picture let me see if I can find Nanna's her's was one of the best I've ever seen.

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Planti,
Oo-Oo-Oo! Plain and Fancy is on my AVSA 150 "most wanted" list too. Get ready...I'm puckering up again.

Yes,being able to buy wholesale is a burden...*Sigh*...but somebody's gotta do it. It's that time of the year where I have to force myself to order $1200.00 to $1500.00 worth of plants and supplies to be shipped for the beginning of the new season...*Sigh* ~~~~~$;>P

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Kylee I was reading back up and African violets are fun and easy to progate by leaf ! You must try one of your new plant leaves !
I fount best to use a 3 oz. solo cup which I put hole/or holes in bottom. I fill the cup with light soil-less mixture. I fount MG potting soil, any African violet potting soil, Bayer 3 in one ..Pro-mix any will work well when mix slightly moist with 50 percent perlite .
Cut the leaf stem short one - 1/2 inch long best to cut straight across less chance of rot or losing it. Stick the leaf into the middle of the solo cup full of soil mixture. staright down until leaf touch soil. This does not cause rot. Water threw with hot to warm water. Let drain. Place cup some where warm where it can get many, many hours 8-12 plus of indirect light nothing burning like snow glare will burn leaves and so on.
Most leaves will root in 6-8 weeks and babies there after. Some can take a year. Best to use a nice fresh leaf. Not an old leaf and not a young baby leaf one from middle. And if you have a leaf under a new flower this is the very best to use !
Now Streptocarpella's " DO NOT " root well by leaf, " BUT" if you take a small group/crown cluster cutting and place it the same as a leaf in small cup or pot, water threw keep them evenly moist but not soggy nor don't let them dry out baby roots will die and rot easy. Then the Streptocarpella will root within a week and growing into a new plant in no time.
Streptocarpus are easy and fun to root by leaf too !
Have Fun !

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Thanks for the lesson! I may get brave and try it! I ended up just pruning out the long shoots of the streptocarpella and just putting them right in the soil. They took off from there just fine. :-)

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I'm going to post a picture of my Plain and Fancy on the thread V_T found titled, appropriately, "Plain and Fancy". Bigred, I'm getting another marker out for you :) I may already have a leaf down as well...

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Wonderful :))

Elkins, AR(Zone 6b)

Kylee...If I can grow a baby violet from a leaf ANYONE can!! Trust me on that...LOL And your lowes find is AWESOME! I have found some real nice sized space violets at my hometown lowes for $7.50, but thats about it on great buys at lowes here.

Planti... I would love a plantlet of Plain and Fancy in if you can spare one. I will trade with you in the spring, I have quite a few leaves down of the most wanted violets.I wont kiss ya tho..Ill leave that to bigred! LOL

What catches my eye are all the vintage and rare violets..they are my favs...I also love the variegated varieties. My favorite flower color I think is a deep purple.
