Companion Plants and Seed Gardens

Yeah, I thought adult aphids had wings but didn't know where they laid the eggs. Maybe if they don't lay them on the plant then the Vaseline would keep them from crawling up. ? Can you see me out there with Vaseline and 100 milkweeds! LOL! I'm actually just going to try it on the first spring crop.

I'm wondering tho about things like "mint repels aphids". What kind of aphids? All aphids? specific ones? Just an in general question, I don't expect you to know Fly, but you could be in charge. ;)

What kind of basil? I've got purple Siam or Tai or something all over the place. I did have less milkweed bugs this year but I was diligent at killling the adults early. My bucket 'o death works great too!

Glad to know that about the sunflowers! I will let one grow somewhere else rather than next to my Crepe Myrtle this year.

Yarrow has never attracted ladybugs for me. It attracts LACEbugs. Find something to get rid of those!!

Paige, you are over your limit of questions for the evening haha....that's 'cause I don't know the answers.

I was unable to control those mw bugs, I would do the BOD and the next day there would be a whole new batch. I think the assassin bugs, wasps, and other predators may have gotten some of them. Then again, with me getting rid of the assassins did it make it easier for the mw bugs?

I read of one gardener that planted pole beans near his sunflowers to control their growth.

The vaseline sounds like a good plan.

I think there may be a lot of myths around companion planting too.

ROTFLMBO! Paige, now I have a visual of you out in the garden with a container of vaseline greasing 100 MIlkweeds! ROTFL!!!! (That beats my jammie and flashlight vigil.)

Thanks! I needed a good laugh tonight! I'll be laughin' over that one for days! :-D :-D

LOL...balanced hormones are great! My mind hasn't been so clear in years! LOL! Really! I have migraines and have finally got some hormone creams that have helped and I've been reading like I was getting credit for it! Last night I was actually taking notes from a book, so watch for that thread! :)

Becky, I see another new thread coming...

Oh! I just had another thought ..... what happens in the Spring when you vaseline the milkweed and the Monarch cats are climbing up and down the stalks? I can just see them getting stuck in the vaseline! So how do you wash little caterpillar feet off, Paige? LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

I need to go to bed. Everything is funny to me now. Off to bed I go!

LOL... at putting vasoline on the stems. You girls are so funny. : )
I wouldn't try the double-sided tape. I'd hate to see a butterfly stuck to it....or a cat.

The Bwasps yeah, I seem to have had a few here and there..but if you all are mostly concerened about Caterpillars, just place them in a safe cage.

I think I will figure in getting a good healthy colony of ladybugs in Spring for the aphids. They sell them by the hundreds at different nurseries. Guess I could buy some, and put them out.. Then again in a couple weeks, then again in another 2 weeks. Meanwhile I will have to cast a formidable shadow, lol.

Here is a B wasp on Cowpen Daisy... He looks as if he is doing a harmless pollination job. Wonder if he would have been distracted if there were about 20 Borderpatch cats on there... The BP are gregarious and the wasp might not be a threat to them unless it found a defenseless crysalid somewhere.
