Halyconia

Moorpark, CA

My halyconia is growing great, large leaves, 6 ft tall lots of leaves, and no flowers. I planted it 3 years ago. It has cold burns every winter and then regroups and pushes out even more growth. Any suggestions to get it to flower?

Your info doesn't say what zone you're in and I don't know where Moorpark is, but it's possible it's suffering too much winter damage and doesn't have time to recover in time to bloom the following year. I don't have any Heliconias myself so I don't know if this could be the case, but I have some other tropical sorts of plants that can survive the winter without dying but if I don't protect them they won't bloom the following year because it takes them too long to recover from winter/frost damage.

Also, how are you fertilizing? Again, I'm not familiar with heliconias specifically, but with most other plants if you give them too much high nitrogen fertilizer they will give you lots of nice green growth but no blooms.
