flowers for hanging planters

Victoria BC, Canada(Zone 9a)

I really like to grow hanging pots of flowers around the house and yard. I will be ordering a bunch of seeds for things to grow in them. So with that in mind would everyone please tell me what you put in your hangers. I always use begonias, fuchsias, and geraniums but am looking for something else to add variety.

Any tips!!

I once grew a hanging pot full of moss rose portulaca for my mom, and it turned out to be quite beautiful. I sowed them nice and thick directly into the pot.

Hi Bea. Here are some of the plants that I have used in my hanging baskets. Every year I try something different.

dichondra, lobelia, calibrachoa, pansies, scaevola, bidens, ipomoea batatas, trailing snapdragons, impatiens, salvia patens, salvia farinacea, osteospurmum, heliotrope, penstemon, godetia & nicotiana

There are loads of others but these are a few.

Ginny.... That is a great idea I can see then draping over the side looking really pretty. Thanks.

Linda.... wow lots of good ideas. I wouldn't have thought of some of these.See two three and more heads are better than one:) I am beginning to see lots of possibilities.

Thanks a bunch!

Bea,

I don't do any hanging baskets any more, but I saw one this year on display at a nursery that was gorgeous. It was very simple, just two kinds of plants. Lotus vine and one of the new Calibrochoa that is a light yellow with a tint of orange, if I remember correctly. It wasn't 'Terra Cotta', it was more yellow. I tried to duplicate it in a pot but by the time I saw it, the Calibrochoa was all sold out. I subbed a Million Bells bronzy-orange/peach colour and it was a real nice combo, although I have to say the bigger the better because their supersize basket made all the difference. I learned that just using two plants en masse can be beautiful.

I also like the look of Golden Creeping Jenny with Sweet Potato 'Blackie' or a similar one. I think it's a nice contrast. Maybe with some coleus in there and asparagus fern. But that would be more for a shadier situation. But all foliage can be colourful too.

I've also seen lovely huge baskets with pink verbena, purple verbena and silver licorice plant.

That's about all I can think of for now. If I see some ideas, I'll let you know.

I thought this was a showy foliage display. Taken at Chanticleer in PA a couple of years ago.

hi,
just wanted to add my 2 cents worth...for hanging baskets I am partial to the petunia, or million bells. They are forgiving if not watered faithfully :)
