An Apology to David

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Just wanted to express my condolences to David5311 and other Michiganders present for the whooping Ohio State is going to inflict on Michigan tomorrow. I hope you don't take it personal. I don't see why we cannot remain friends. More importantly, I hope the players, the school, and everybody in Michigan will keep their chins up. A sound thrashing from the Buckeyes is nothing to be ashamed of.

I offer sincere condolences on the passing of long-time Michigan coach Bo Schembechler. Scott, you're fortunate those over-rated Buckeyes lucked out and didn't have to face Wisconsin. Since our only loss this year was to Michigan, I'm pulling for the Wolverines. No matter the outcome, the Big 10 rules college football.

I am not a football fan, Scott, so no condolences are in order to me! I really couldn't care less who wins. I have to work tomorrow 7-3 and I am not going to waste the rest of my precious weekend day watching some young 300 pounders bash each other's brains in. I would have to say that I went to Columbus once for a game with some friends 35 years ago in college, and I thought OSU fans in general were among the rudest people I had ever seen though. I know they are not always especially well treated here, but I don't think it is as bad as in Columbus.

And yes, Bo Schembechler died today. I met him once, though not in any context related to football. And the current UM coach, Lloyd Carr, is a good friend of my former neighbor and dentist. And he toured through my old garden at its June peak once, and I think really appreciated it for what it was. I heard him give a great talk to high school scholar athletes (when my daughter ran track). So, he is obviously a man of class and distinction (especially for appreciating my old garden :o)))))

I wonder if Woody Hayes was a garden lover? Doubt it.......

Rest assured that any garden visitors here will be treated warmly, including those from OSU, without any rotten tomatoes (and without the blue and gold hype).......

I think it's pretty common knowledge that if Wisconsin would have played Michigan a few weeks later and at Wisconsin they wouldn't be undefeated anyway. Not sure who I am rooting for - I guess Ohio State since they are the better team.

Well, I am a MICHIGAN grad, times two. So is my wife (x2), sister (x1), brother in law (x2), brother (x1) and father in law (x1). I am passionate about MICHIGAN football.

I went to the 1997 UofM/OSU game, the year we won the National Championship. My brother's season tix were just above the OSU section in the south end zone. As we were leaving, an OSU fan said, "Well, if we can't go to the Rose Bowl, we're glad it's Michigan."

Unfortunately, I think that this small display of sportsmanship is the exception rather than the rule. IMHO, David is right, it's a little worse south of the border. Two years ago, Ohio took bomb sniffing dogs through all of the MICHIGAN buses and the players gear. This year, UofM is taking campus police down to Columbus for the game. And I understand that UofM sent out a campus wide email instructing students and fans of MICHIGAN to not travel alone and not to drive down with Michigan plates.

It is my hope that Alan Branch and LeMar Woodley will repeatedly feed Troy Smith some OSU turf.

Edited to add that all of the Maize and Blue are mourning the loss of Bo. As a commentator said, he'll be watching and he'll have the best seat in the house.

GO BLUE!

Yeah, stressbaby, but are you taking out your pruners?

Or are you one of the full-skirted fans?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

I hadn't heard about Bo Schembechler. My condoloences. He was a class act! Woody was too, until a certain point in his life. I've always suspected he might've had one of those slowly degenerative diseases. Dunno.

I've got two boys at school in Columbus right now. I better not hear of them mistreating any Michigan fans (except, maybe, on online gardening forums), though I know they wouldn't think of it. One is an art student at Columbus College of Art and Design and probably isn't really sure if "football" is a sport or an ailment of a lower extremity. The other is a fifth-year senior at OSU but hasn't yet figured out a way to get himself or me into "The Shoe" for a game yet. If I his college career winds up having OSU as National Champion for both his freshman and senior years--and he never even got to a single game--I think I'll cry. Just roll up in a ball and cry...and stop paying on the student loans!

But, and this is very, very hard for me to say this, if Michigan should beat Ohio State, then they had better darn well win the BCS! And Henne should win the Heisman!

How do you get a female Michigan fan into an elevator?

Grease her thighs and throw in a twinky.

"isn't really sure whether "football is a sport or an ailment of a lower extremity" Oh it is definitely the latter

Speaking as a non-fan of football, native Ohioan, Miami Univ. 1985, I will say that getting hit with a buckeye hurts no matter which team you root for. That said, I hope it rains on y'all. OSU and U of Mich fans are dangerous for the shrubbery.

Halftime score: 28-14. Number two son actually arrived in town this afternoon unexpectedly to see Hamlet with a friend. He gets the Shakespeare thing from his mother. Absolutely none of the football thing from me. I'm wondering if he might be a result of self-pollination.

He didn't get that from Scott either.

Maybe he's a graft chimera, like + Crataegomespilus potsdamiensis.

Forgive me for not getting into this rivarly thing, but still being a NYC kid (displaced about 30 miles to the north), this is still how I view the world! ;)

Just think Yankees - Red Sox, or Giants - Jets.

Oh, that's right. They all keep getting beat.

Is a female Michigander called a Michigoose?

Watch it VV! Dem's fightin' words. I can drive to your place undercover and release the viburnum beetles I've been raising. Or I can do as I did as a kid and just ring your doorbell and run.

Taking a cue from Snapple:

Just don't call her late for dinner.

VLBgardener:

You're talking to a long-time Reds and Bengals fan; 'nuff said.

'Course, I think we won the 1990 World Series in four straight against somebody...

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Michigan tied for second in the Big Ten - they shouldn't feel bad for not winning the championship.
