indoor prop. lights question

Scottsdale, AZ

When starting MG seeds indoors, would you want the lights on 24/7 until they sprout or still do the normal daylight/night cycle?
I'm thinking this maybe where I went wrong with the first one I started indoor. It is losing the first leaves (ones dead and the 2nd is dying) and it's the longest, skinniest little thing I ever saw. I've been taking it outdoors during the day, warm 78-80*, sunny but no changes.

Now the 2nd seed I planted is just about to break the surface of the soil and I want to make sure this one works out better.

btw, this time, I placed a plastic bag over the pot, like a tent, to keep the moisture in. So, do I remove the bag when it's really sprouted or leave the bag?

That's two questions but I really really want this to grow and mature, not wither on the vine.

I can only tell you what I do. I cycle my lights just like a normal day/night. I keep the peat pots at about 89degrees while the seed is sprouting and they really pop up quick at that temp. Then I cool them down to 80 in a mini-greenhouse humidity cover till the sprouts are really established. Then they just go out on a table under the HPS light. Hope that helps!

yes, that helps, thank you.

Read about light manipulation of MGs to get earlier flowers at this web site:

JMGs tend to flower up when days become shorter (that is, they are short day plants). I am going to try to condition my seedlings in the spring as they suggest on this web site so I can get flowers 20-30 days earlier than plants raised under natural conditions in the spring.

I don't know if you really need the lights on if the seeds were just sown, this is something I do and don't know if it is the correct way, but seems to work for me. I place them on heatmat until they germinate, then turn the lights on because once they break the soil, they need light to grow, at the same time you need to turn off the heatmats so the root system doesn't get burned. But, it seems that when they are still under, they should not need the lights yet, unless you are using the lights for heat to germinate. I hope that makes some sort of sense.
