I am just getting interested in lilies such as "cerneum",Heirloom Species Lily speciosum album and other species types. Are this martagon types, with the martagon type foliage and prefer shade to sun? I am beginning to love these recurved petal types. There are so many more lilies than I ever thought that there were. You guys have really gotten me going on this lily thing.....and I'm really loving it. Wallaby's pictures (in species bulbs section) haven't helped this addiction either ;0).
Heirloom Species Lilies
Congratulations! Another one sees the light.(!)
Certainly all species in the martagon section would have whorled leave. That would be:
L. martagon
L. hansonii
L. distichum
L. tsingtauense
L. medioloides
Most if not all Americans
L. michiganense
L. philadelphicum
L. superbum
L. canadense
L. pardalinum
etc etc etc, 20 some in all
While it is safe to say that martagon section species all grow natively in shade/part shade, I'll bet you've seen me post more than once that they need not be placed as such if they still have cool feet and ample water. And they will grow larger faster too.
Americans can very with their preferences.
You should especially have these two references bookmarked. Both are comprehensive in their treatment of species lilies:
http://www.the-genus-lilium.com/main.htm
http://www.deflorum.com/lilium.html
Don't miss the "For unlisted species" at the bottom left of the de Florum species page. It took me a while before I noticed it.
You will find it will be easy to get your answers for specific species from these.
Cernuum has scattered leaves, not whorled. My general preference has always been for recurved tepals(petals), but realize also that lilies don't need to be straight species to exhibit that trait.
Hey lefty , thanks for the two links. The second one looked familiar, but I don't think when I saw it I bookmarked it. Now I did!
I have always preferred the Orientals and the Orienpets, but since finding The Lily Garden last Spring (can you believe I hadn't heard of them?), some of the Asiatic types with recurved petals were beautiful and in the garden...wow. Those little flowers, though often small, are so darn cute.
I just ordered from Scheepers sale and picked up a few species. Can't wait...
Thanks for the wisdom...and websites!
Hey is there a good place to get species in the USA?
Thank you
The best place to get species lilies in through the Speices Lily Preservation Socity. Membership is $12. per year and they sell bulbs every fall. Buggy Crazy has a few...
Also the Pacific Rim here:

I ordered all that Buggy Crazy had of species lilies (1 of each type). I never should have started Ed McRae's book, this is what has me going on this kick of species, among other things :0) Thanks, you guys, for your wealth of info, societies and websites. I have them bookmarked. You should see the lily bookm arks I have now, but then you probably have a list the same length. I love being saturated with lily info. It's really great that there's so much out there.
OK then magnolia, suss up. What species have you bought! We want to know!
You should see my bookmarks of all kinds, I have so many it's not worth searching for them, easier to do a google......
Wallaby, I have purchased L. superbum, speciosum album ,speciosum rubrum, L. henryi v. citrinum (both Flared Henry and turks cap flowering type),L. henryi, L. cernuum, L. henryi (WHITE BICOLOR HENRY)& Heirloom Species Lily citronella.
I almost bought Lilium formosanum, but then what Buggy Crazy noted scared me out of it, that it has frozen out there (in Oregon State), several zones above me. That and I'd spent so much already :0)
It's remembering what information is there when I want it will be the trick. Yeah, isn't Google just great?
I too am enjoying planting more species lilies. Going to NALS Convention in July blew my mind.
That's a nice selection magnolia, the speciosums are charming. There is such a large range of species, once you start to look into them in depth there is no turning back. You will be growing them from seed next!
Wanda, lucky thing, my mind would be shattered as it has already blown....
Wallaby, under the direction of Pard, I have tried some seeds already, that and scales. They are in process.... I worry that they won't turn out, but I gotta try! Wouldn't it be just splendid if they did? A gift in itself, no matter what the darn thing turns out to look like.
The different species you can grow really inspired me, Wallaby. Thanks.
Wanda, I should have gone to NALS, it was so close. I just wasn't clear as to what it was all about then. Now, I am sad to have missed it.
All that extra water during fall and winter on the west coast can cause havock with lily survival. The mere presence of so much free water in freezing soil can't be good. My formosanums (and phillipinense) have made it through two zone 4 winters in my zone 4a garden. And I have friends here with formosanum and formosanum var. pricei for more than 10 years. The person I receive my formosanum and phillipinense bulbs from lives on the south Alaskan coast. Zone 6. He lost all of his last winter, and I was able to replenish his stock with his own stuff! What goes around, comes around, even in a literal sense. LOL
But there is probably variation in cold hardiness within the formosanum species, as well as all the other characteristics we have talked about in other threads. Who really knows if Buggycrazy has a less cold hardy variant or not?
So, Lefty, what you are telling me is to try it, right? It looks like a beauty, very different from anything I bought or have. Your experience gives me hope, and our winters are more similar.
Okay, Lefty, I'm sold. "hey Buggy Crazy, is it to late????"
What beautiful pictures! You should make greeting cards. really. Thanks, Lefty, that's all of the convincing I need.
Always glad to feed a lily frenzy.
