Adventures with my Sundog

Las Cruces, NM(Zone 8a)

Congratulations, and thank you for posting all the good info. I think a lot of the advice you gave would apply to any greenhouse kit, so I am taking notes. My hat is off to you for accomplishing this by yourself, that is a really big job for one person!

So glad you finished it in time to protect your plants. I'll bet you can do some tweaking of it when the warm weather returns. I've filled big gaps on my house with that round gray foam backer rod that you stick in gaps before you apply the caulk...that might work to help fill in some of your gaps, even if you caulk or tape over it. You can find it at Lowes in different diameters. Good job!

Wow, what a great saga. Congratulations on your new greenhouse and getting it together just in time for bad weather. I have a harbor freight 6 x 8. DH put it together mostly by himself, but either my son or I helped with getting the bigger pieces together (whoever was around). I can't imagine even trying it myself. Your info is excellent and will help a lot more diy'ers.

Good Morning- I'm a new member here and scearching for feedback on kit greenhouses in the $1000 range. After much looking I am very close to buying a sundog and would like your opinion on them now that you've had it up for a while. I am mostly concerned with how sturdy it is as I'm in wisconsin so it would have some snow load in the winter. Thanks in Advance! Jean

You might contact the mfg and ask if it's supposed to stand up to snow load--since I put mine together by myself and as a result not everything fits perfectly, there's no way mine would hold up but if it was put together right it would do better. However, I'm not convinced that any of these lower end greenhouses are going to hold up to much of a snow load. You might want to start a new thread and ask about people's experience with snow load, I'm definitely the wrong person to ask since it's rare to see even a snowflake in the winter where I am! It did hold up OK during a windstorm ~40mph winds, but that's really all I could say.

You might also look into the Harbor Freight greenhouse--they have the same twinwall polycarbonate as all the other ~$1000 greenhouses, but they are much lower cost, the 6x8 one runs ~$300 and a bigger size is ~$600. Again, I don't know about the snow load but I doubt if it's any better/worse than the Sundog, construction is about the same. But definitely start a new thread--there are lots of cold climate people around here who could help you out on the snow load, but if they weren't watching this thread they may not see your question.
