Just flew in the greenhouse, not a sign of one all spring and summer!
And would you look now,I shut the door on her, she's not getting away this time!!!LOL
Migrating Bird
Very nice!
That's a beauty. I've had my BOP about 4 years now and never a bloom.
Nice!
That's a great photo, I'm so jealous. How do you get passiflora blooms this time of year?
Wow Don...then there is hope for my BOP yet!!! Nice bloom!
Thanks, repotted it into a larger container with fertilzer that will last up to 9 months!
Western exposure in the greenhouse, very high humidity! And if that doesn't work!
Pray!!!
I just noticed tonite, there is another bud forming as well!!!
Marcia they just need time!!!!Rootbound in the pot helps too!
That is on the bird of paradise!!!
Much smaller,but heck,ain't gonna complain!!!
ok great! Mine has been in the same pot for a long time. It should do something soon I hope!
Mine always blooms fall thru winter, wish it would bloom during the summertime!
Tropicman,
I know how excited you are since last week I noticed I've got 2 blooms coming along - one larger than the other! Question.....how long does it take for them to really bloom once you see it trying to open ever so lightly? Also, how long does the bloom last?
Now the bad news........the BOP is planted very near a palm that is dead/dying that is going to replaced since it's within the warranty time and the palm folks want to replace it right away.
Can I dig up the BOP and replant after the palm is replaced? I would do it at the same time they're replacing it and I'd do it gently. Or should I ask them to wait to replace the palm after the BOP blooms?
Thanks for help,
Barbara
Bird of Paradise bloom when there are at least 5-7 leaves on the plant per "bulb". If you cut any leaves off and the count gets below that you will have to wait until new leaves come on. I bought one this year that had 7 leaves and 1 bloom. More leaves came on and more flowers. I now have about 14 leaves, 2 flowers and another coming. I use a slow release fertilizer w/a low middle number about every month in the summer (the summers here are quite hot so those containers that say "Lasts (3, 6, 9 mos.) are misleading) They need plenty of water but good drainage and full sun. They like to be rootbound but will grow well in the soil where they won't have to be watered as often. I have succesfully grown BOPs for over 20 years and they have spread and multiplied and bloomed well for me using this method. They are not invasive but be aware that if you try to separate the"bulbs" you are in for a "job of work" as they say and the same are heavy. When I had mine in a pot they were impossible to move which is why I even considered putting them in the ground.
Editing to say that they seem to need a lot of heat before they put on a flower so maybe they store the heat in some way - I don't really mean that - but maybe you understand what I'm saying. Perhaps putting your BOP on concrete in the full sun will help it to start blooming earlier in the year.. They ARE a tropical, you know. Normally mine don't start blooming until about July here but I'm sure that in z9 or 10 or higher they bloom all year round starting earlier in the year.
Good luck!!
Ann

Hi Barb,
I find when you move anything in bloom the stress on the plant shortens the bloom time,or may stop it entirely.
Every day a new petal in the flower has opened,4 days in a row, now, and looks like more may be coming, not only that another flower bud has started developing, that will be 3 blooms all together this fall.
If they would wait.that would be my choice,to plant another palm.
Tropicman,
Thanks for the advice. I figured you would say that even though it wasn't what I wanted to hear. LOL!
Please post another picture for us when it's fully open.

This is today at 5 am,not sure if this is all the way open or not.
You bet!
More the merryer!
They're both beautiful!
Good news about replacing the dead palm.........
They came by to check it and it's not dead so it doesn't need to disturb the BOP. Last night I placed a sheet over it since we were in the 40's. I'll baby it through the cold this year and maybe next year I'll put back in a pot to keep it root bound. We'll see.
Hopefully, I will get the full bloom and I can post a pic.
Barbara
Great news!
I left mine outside into the mid thirties, which might have help it come into bloom!
Once it has put on a munber of leaves it will blooom, just like a banana.
Lookin good, Don!! Now..I'm nosy...what's the strainer for??????
To strain! LOL!!!!!
Passion seeds, then the pond in the greenhouse, have hanging plants over the pond, when I leave the doors open, birds fly inside, start nest building in the hanging pots drop all kinds of debree in the water.
Then when the electricity is out and want pasta on the grill,I drain the water out!!!LOL
Just kidding on that one!!!!!Gottcha!
LOL!!!!! Hmmm...pasta on the grill huh?!!!! Stole that from Patti, I bet!
I wished Patti would cook on the grill, she says it's my job!!!!
She likes everything very rare, and I like mine pink center,so when hers gets a little overdone, she can yell at me!!!
Well gee...isn't that what husbands are for?????? To cook on the grill...and yell at???? LOL!
No!
LOL...ok!
What a beauty, I went and looked at mine and it has 5 leaves. Mine are much taller, are there different varieties? They reach the roof of the gh and bend outward. (of course my gh is a almost flat top 8 ft)
