asparagus fern

Williamsburg, VA(Zone 7b)

I have 2 potted asparagus ferns that have spent the summer outside in shade/partial sun. In the past, when I have moved them inside, they tend to turn yellow and lose their "leaves." What can I do to keep them green?

Mine do the same thing. I have found the higher the humidity the less "leaves" I lose.
edited - I have also found keeping them in a cooler place for winter helps too (with high humidity)

So, where do you put yours for the winter?

I have a sunroom (all glass thing like those FL rooms with the curved glass and brown framing) on the east side of our home that I keep all my plants in for the winter. I only heat this room when I the temps are going below 35 outside. Just to keep it from freezing in there. My boston ferns look the worst each year. Right now they look ratty. Something about just being brought indoors makes them turn yellow and drop. My Asp ferns hold out longer and do not lose hardly any leaves in there. MIL keeps hers in her home but puts them in a room with bright light and keeps the heat on about 40. Hers drop leaves but they still stay green.
This is when I started bringing things in.

Here where I live my asparagus ferns stay out year round and every now and then they get too big and I have to cut them back. They get a crew cut down to about 3" or 4", some fertilizer and water and they immediately start putting out new and much prettier growth. Bet that would work for those indoor asparagus also. You will be getting rid of those older fronds that shed and it will take a while for the new growth to start shedding.

I have done the same for the Boston type ferns.

I agree. A Florist taught us that trick.
All our ferns (and hanging pot plants basically) get a good haircut when we bring them in.
The AF will bounce back wonderfully.

I will have to try that. Think it would hurt them that they've been in the house for a while now?

Well in my house it's cut them off of sweep them up.
The outdoor AP stalks always brown up and fall off.
Cutting now won't hurt.

Does anyone have a portable greenhouse? I'm thinking of buying one but I can't decide whether I should. I think it may help my AF as well as other plants I bring in for the winter. Lisa
