Got the seeds a few years back from a trade labeled 'Red Japanese moonvine'. Want to be more specific with this name, please.
Evening glory... which is this moonvine?
hi Dinu
Ipomoea turbinata is the prper name for this one.
Thanks imzadi, that's it.
Dinu, mine bloomed very quickly after germinating, made a few pods and then just quit - so it didn't make much of a show on its arbor. But I have a thing for blue moonflowers. Did yours make much growth? Could you send a pic of the overall vine? There's so much more romance in a vine when it drapes itself over its support. (Thanks to EmmaGrace for the seed last spring - what a moment when those flowers opened at twilight for us!)
Blue Spiral, My turbinata did the same thing last year. Made a few flowers and then just stopped. I was so dissapointed, I didn't start them this yr. May try again next yr
and keep the seed pods picked off. I'm also in zone 7.

Hmmm. That's interesting, because the way this moonflower seemed to come roaring out its germinating seed like gangbusters really distinguished it from the other morning glories I tried to grow last summer.
Well, thanks to generosity of Ron, EmmaGrace and Ansonfan, I got to see up close for the first time the incredible diversity among the morning glory clan. Many summer flowers don't bloom for more than two weeks, anyway, but we still grow them for that passing magical moment. Plus, this one looks like it's a good candidate for growing among other flowers without overpowering them. I bet it would be pretty on a tripod coming up through a tall, ghostly-pale yellow canna...I doubt I'd resist those intense red, tiny sprinkles from the feathery red cypress vine in there, either...
mine produced flowers on and off. i have also heard if you want more flowers dont let it go to seed . mine as soon as i see the pod is ready i plck it. dont leave it on the vine. mine was growing with my air potato. they seemed to live fine together.
Mine too had been short lived. Blooms a few flowers quickly and then go silent. Have to watch out this one. Have planted 4-5 together. Will come up with the total picture of the vine sometime. Have to pick the pods and see how it does in terms of the number of blooms.
