leaf drop

New Iberia, LA(Zone 8b)

I bought a 25' willow oak and planted it two weeks ago. I did all of the right things-hole size, backdigging, staking, etc. Now, the tree leaves are turning brown and the tree is dropping leaves big time. Willow oaks don't usually drop all of their leaves at once-could this be shock? We have had some cool days and nights, but it has been windy. Yes, I am going back to the nursery today with leaf samples! I read today( Kinda late,Huh!) that willow oaks should be transplanted in the early spring. But this was in a large nursery grown pot, so I don't consider it a transplant-or is it! Any advice would be helpful. My lot is devoid of trees and I have had willow oaks(already growing) before in FL. and really like them. My zone is 9/8B in southwest LA.

For me, the best planting time for the gulf coast is December and January. That assures that the tree is dormant and also allows time for root establishment before the spring heat arrives. Did you break up the rootball any before planting?

BG,

25' tall and in a pot seems like a lot of tree for a pot unless the pot was 50" across or larger. I would suspect drying out but without knowing the details of your weather, the mass of the tree, size of pot, etc, it's just a guess.

When I took the tree out of the pot, the roots were in good shape. I gently opened the bottom and side roots and then planted and watered. We had a good rain about two days after planting. I have made sure that the tree has not dried out but is not overwatered either. I am hoping that it may just be transplant shock. Thank goodness I purchased the tree from a good nursery that I have done quite a bit of business with. I'll see what he says tomorrow when I bring in leaf samples. And yes, escambiaguy, I think anymore trees will be planted in December or January!! I guess, I just was impatient and tired of looking at my bare yard and figured that early November would be ok!!
