I suspect that Ukigumo means "Floating Cloud". This morning glory looks just like Blue Silk. Is this the English name making this MG one and the same?
I have a two year old plant that I have always thought was a Blue Silk in a 5 gallon container inside my basement that is producing seeds that I am harvesting this week. When I went to put these seeds in a container to store them I discovered my two year old blue silk seeds are black and not the tan that these fresh seeds are. I searched among my other Japanese Morning Glory seeds and found only one match in color....Ukigumo "floating cloud". I searched dg and found no pics of this Japanese MG. I finally went over old pics in the morning glory forum and found a picture that sure looks like Blue Silk. SO.....Guess I have to plant one or two of these black seeds and see what comes up.
Is Ukigumo "floating cloud" the same as Blue Silk?
fairyhunter - Good question...personally I don't think so...
The first packs of the Ukigumo that were made available were producing some light colored blooms that looked like Blue Silk/Akatsuki No Tsuyu...then the second version of Ukigumo produced some blooms with a wide blizzard pattern...
The Blue Silk and Akatsuki no Tsuyu are identical or almost identical...
The Ukigumo produces a wider range of blooms...some that resemble the Blue Silk and some with the blizzard pattern...
THe Blue Silk that was first available in the US from Park Seed had all tan seeds...then some dark seeds came out of japan...same with the Akatsuki no tsuyu...
The Ukigumo also has both dark and lighter seeds with some plants tending to produce more light seeds and some plants tending to produce more dark seeds...
Here's some of the threads for reference...

Thanks Ron
This plant produced a huge amount of blooms this summer that were very consistant with the
pictures in the Plant File for Blue Silk. some of the blooms were more faded than others . My camera doesn't take very good pictures and I have no blooms at all right now....the blooms looked like the Plant File Pictues that Moonlighting and Queen B had contributed to the Blue Silk pictures.
I looked at pictures taken late summer and found one my daughter took with her disposable camera. She had one of those cd's made so she could share her pics with her friends. Here is a picture of my cat "cotton" and my blue silk. This picture only shows the bottom half of the plant. What you can not see going into the above hanging basket and up to the ceiling and along the curtain rods are much much more of the plant. comparing these blooms to the size of "cotton's" head gives you an idea of how large these blooms are.
what a great picture. You have a nice camera. I just love blue morning glory's
Hey 'Guys',
I would suggest that a good sepal and leaf comparison be done like golgi/gail did on her 3 similar cultivars that she has...
Check the links I added on my second post to the following thread

Will the Blue Silk from Ukigumo always produce 'blue silk' or is it carrying for the blizzard gene and eventually throw some blizzards(?)...
Inquiring minds want to know...and will contribute important information if an official registry for Morning Glories eventually sees fruition at some point...
